Chapter 6 - The Glass Cracks

The rehearsal dinner in the grand private salon of the Plaza Hotel was an exercise in suffocating social prestige. Diamond necklaces glittered under crystal chandeliers, and waiters in white gloves moved silently among senators, hedge fund managers, and blue-blooded matriarchs. Julian Vance, dressed in an immaculate midnight-blue tuxedo, stood up to deliver the best man’s toast, tapping his crystal flute with a silver fork to command the room’s attention.

""To Ethan Calder,"" Julian announced, his voice booming with theatrical charm and practiced warmth. ""A man who conquered Wall Street, survived tragedy, and has now found the anchor he so richly deserves in Madeline. Ethan, my brother, you’ve always been the smartest man in any boardroom, but snagging Madeline is the finest trade you’ll ever execute. To the bride and groom!""

The room erupted into polite applause and clinking glasses. Ethan smiled politely, raising his glass, but his eyes were scanning the perimeter of the room. Nora stood near the service entrance, clipboard in hand, directing the waitstaff with military precision. She looked exhausted, her face unusually pale, refusing to meet Ethan’s searching gaze whenever he looked in her direction.

Later that evening, as the party began to wind down and the guests migrated toward the lounge, Nora slipped into the audiovisual control booth behind the banquet hall to confirm the media presentation scheduled for the wedding reception. As she checked the master flash drive provided by Madeline’s personal assistant, she noticed an uncatalogued secondary folder labeled Vance-Cross Holdings.

Curiosity and adrenaline surging through her veins, Nora opened the folder. Inside were scanned PDF documents: signed trust agreements, offshore wire transfers through a bank in the Cayman Islands, and an executive summary detailing the systematic liquidation of Ethan’s private real estate holdings twelve months post-marriage, all countersigned by Julian Vance and Madeline Cross. It was the undeniable smoking gun. Madeline’s assistant had inadvertently backed up the private conspiracy documents onto the master media drive.

Nora’s hands shook violently as she copied the files onto her encrypted personal thumb drive. Just as the transfer completed, the door to the booth clicked open.

Julian Vance stepped inside, a half-empty glass of bourbon in his hand. His charming public facade instantly vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory sneer. ""You're spending an awful lot of time lurking in private corners, Bennett. I saw the way you were looking at Madeline at the club last week. You think you're clever, don't you?""

Nora smoothly slid her thumb drive into the pocket of her blazer, keeping her voice completely level. ""I am verifying the slide deck for tomorrow’s reception, Mr. Vance. If you'll excuse me, I have vendor schedules to finalize.""

Julian took a menacing step forward, blocking the narrow exit. ""Listen to me, little girl. You're a two-bit Brooklyn party planner living paycheck to paycheck. Ethan Calder lives in an untouchable stratosphere. If you try to open your mouth about anything you think you saw, I will ensure you never book a children's birthday party in this state again. Eleanor Cross will ruin you, and Ethan won't believe a word that comes out of your mouth. Stay in your lane, collect your check, and walk away.""

Nora lifted her chin, meeting his arrogant gaze with absolute, unyielding defiance. ""Get out of my way, Julian. You might have Ethan fooled, but to me, you're just another cheap crook in an expensive suit.""
