Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Rain

The afternoon before the wedding, Manhattan was swallowed by a sudden, violent November cloudburst. Nora was standing beneath the dripping green awning of an artisan bakery in SoHo, waiting for the final delivery of the wedding favors, when a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the curb. The rear window glided down silently, revealing Ethan sitting inside.

""Get in before you drown, Nora,"" he said firmly.

Nora hesitated for a second before ducking inside the warm, leather-scented sanctuary of the vehicle. The interior was quiet, isolated from the roar of Manhattan traffic. Ethan looked worn down, his eyes shadowed by the relentless demands of the past three weeks, yet the moment he saw her, an involuntary softness spread across his features.

""You don't need to be running deliveries in this storm,"" Ethan said gently, handing her a dry linen handkerchief from his pocket. ""That's what courier services are for.""

""I don't trust couriers with sugar-lace truffles twenty-four hours before a society wedding,"" Nora replied, dabbing the raindrops from her forehead, hyper-aware of how close he was sitting beside her. The scent of cedarwood, rain, and his expensive cologne filled the confined space, making it difficult to breathe. ""How is Sophie? She was nervous about the flower girl dress when I fitted her yesterday.""

Ethan smiled, a warm, genuine expression that transformed his rugged face. ""She wouldn't take the dress off until bedtime. She told Mrs. Gable that Miss Nora made her look like a real princess, not a porcelain doll like Eleanor wanted."" Ethan reached over and gently caught Nora’s hand, holding it between his own. The gesture was unhurried, natural, and devastatingly tender. ""Thank you, Nora. For Sophie. For putting up with the chaos. For... reminding me what it feels like to laugh again.""

Nora’s heart ached with an agonizing intensity. The secret she carried burned behind her ribs like hot coal. Look at him, she thought. He is walking into an ambush engineered by the people he loves most. She opened her mouth to speak, the words forming on her tongue—*Madeline is using you, Julian is betraying you*—but the sheer weight of reality paralyzed her. What proof did she have? A whispered conversation in a dimly lit hallway? Eleanor Cross had high-powered attorneys on retainer who would tie Nora up in slander lawsuits until she was penniless.

""Ethan, I..."" Nora stammered, her voice trembling slightly.

""What is it, Nora?"" Ethan asked, his gaze searching her eyes with intense focus, sensing the sudden terror vibrating through her frame. He leaned in slightly closer, his thumb stroking the sensitive skin of her wrist. ""You can tell me anything. You know that, don't you?""

May you like

""Just... promise me you'll be careful,"" Nora whispered, pulling her hand back with immense effort, tears stinging the backs of her eyes. ""Promise me that tomorrow, whatever happens, you remember that you and Sophie deserve real happiness. Not an arrangement. Not a compromise. The real thing.""

Ethan stared at her, stunned by the raw emotion in her voice. Before he could demand an explanation, the car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Plaza Hotel. Nora grabbed her tote bag, pushed open the door, and disappeared into the rain before he could utter another word.
