Chapter 7 - Three Minutes to Midnight

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was transformed into an ethereal wonderland of eight hundred imported white roses, cascading silk drapery, and warm, golden candlelight. Two national television crews were stationed discreetly on the mezzanine level, while four hundred of the country’s most powerful figures filled the rows of gilded chairs. The air was heavy with the perfume of expensive flowers and the soft, soaring prelude of a forty-piece string orchestra.

Ethan Calder stood at the head of the aisle in his bespoke tuxedo, his hands clasped before him. By every objective measure of society, this was the crowning moment of his triumphant restoration. Yet inside his chest, an unbearable, suffocating dread was crushing his lungs. Every fiber of his being was screaming that he was marching toward an emotional execution.

Three minutes before the double doors were scheduled to open, Ethan looked past the towering floral arches, past the glittering sea of diamonds, and found Nora Bennett standing by the rear double doors.

She wore a simple dark blazer, her headset pressed to her ear, clutching her clipboard to her chest like armor. She wasn't part of this world. She didn't belong to the country clubs, the trust funds, or the polished lies. Yet as their eyes locked across the cavernous room, Ethan felt an undeniable, earth-shattering clarity. Nora was the only person in this room who saw him for who he truly was. She was the one who had brought laughter back to his daughter’s eyes. She was the one who worked until her feet bled to fix a disaster she hadn't created.

And Nora knew what he was feeling. The sheer agony of realization was written across her face. That was why she looked away, biting her lip to hold back tears.

Suddenly, Nora’s headset crackled with a frantic voice from the bridal suite prep room. It was Mrs. Gable, Sophie’s nanny, whispering in a panicked tone: ""Nora! You need to come upstairs right now! Sophie ran toward the green room to give Madeline her flower basket, and she saw... oh God, Nora, you have to get up here!""

Nora dropped her clipboard onto the coordinator’s table, pushed past the bewildered ushers, and sprinted up the service stairs toward the private bridal suite on the third floor. Ethan, noticing her sudden panicked sprint, didn't hesitate. Ignoring the murmurs of four hundred guests and Eleanor Cross’s scandalized gasp, Ethan stepped off the altar platform and followed Nora into the corridor.
