Chapter 7 - A Mother's Blessing

Two weeks after the boardroom purge, the spring sunshine was breaking through the lingering winter clouds over Boston.

The private terrace suite at Massachusetts General Hospital was filled with the fresh scent of white lilies and sweet citrus tea.

My mother, Clara, sat propped up in bed against a bank of fluffy pillows, wearing a soft pink knit cardigan.

Her skin, once ashen and sunken from months of brutal chemotherapy, now carried a healthy, warm glow.

Her oncology panel from that morning had confirmed the miracle we had prayed for: complete, clinical remission.

Beside her bed sat Luca, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up, peeling a fresh orange with a small silver knife.

"You're spoiling me, Luca," my mother smiled, taking a slice of fruit from his hand.

"A billionaire shouldn't be spending his Tuesday morning slicing oranges for an old woman."

"An old woman who raised the most remarkable woman in this world deserves all the fruit in Boston, Clara," Luca replied with an easy, boyish grin that made him look ten years younger.

I stood by the window, watching them interact with tears of profound, peaceful gratitude welling in my eyes.

Three months ago, I was an exhausted, terrified girl counting pennies in a hospital cafeteria, ready to sell my soul to keep my mother alive.

I had entered a contract expecting a cage.

Instead, I had found a husband whose strength was matched only by the boundless generosity of his heart.

A soft knock sounded on the door, and Nathan Brooks, our family attorney who had replaced Marcus's corrupt legal team, stepped inside.

"Good morning, Mrs. Varenna, Chairman," Nathan smiled, setting a leather folder on the bedside table.

"The federal court in Boston finalized the grand jury indictments thirty minutes ago."

Luca looked up, his expression turning calm and professional.

"What is the final disposition, Nathan?"

"Dr. Victor Sterling has surrendered his medical license and entered a guilty plea for wire fraud and conspiracy," Nathan reported.

"He received nine years at the federal facility in Devens and will testify against Marcus."

"And my uncle?"

"Marcus and Diane were denied bail due to flight risk through their Cayman shell accounts," Nathan said.

"They are facing fifteen to twenty years on federal racketeering and attempted poisoning charges."

"Julian was granted five years of probation in exchange for surrendering every share of his inheritance and turning over his father’s hidden ledgers."

"He moved to a small rental apartment in Vermont yesterday."

My mother reached out, taking Luca’s hand and mine, pressing them together between her warm, healed palms.

"The darkness is behind you now, children," my mother whispered, her eyes shining with maternal grace.

"You fought for the truth, and God has blessed this house with a new life."

"Now you go home."

"And build a family where love is the only rule."

Luca looked down at our joined hands, then looked up into my mother's eyes, nodding with deep, reverent sincerity.

"I give you my sacred word, Clara," Luca whispered.

"No harm will ever touch them again."
