Chapter 5 - The Medical Reckoning

Marcus’s jaw worked silently, his eyes darting frantically toward the state detectives flanking the rear exit doors.

"Treason?!" Marcus laughed nervously, trying to rally the confused board members around the table.

"You’re unhinged, Luca! The stress of managing the maritime expansion has clearly compromised your mental stability!"

"Is that the narrative you and Victor Sterling agreed on, Uncle?" Luca asked, stepping to the center of the room.

He pulled a thick, red-tabbed legal dossier from his coat and dropped it onto the center of the table.

Beside it, Dr. Finch placed an insulated clinical transport case.

"Twelve years ago," Luca announced to the twenty-four silent executives,

"Dr. Victor Sterling accepted a seven-hundred-thousand-dollar offshore wire transfer into a Swiss account titled Valhalla Holdings."

"The authorized signers on that account were Marcus Varenna and Diane Varenna."

Diane jumped up from her chair, her ivory tweed jacket pulling tight against her chest, her face turning an ugly shade of blotchy red.

"That is a complete fabrication! Valhalla was an art investment vehicle!"

"Valhalla was the payment for a fabricated medical report, Diane," I said, stepping forward beside my husband, looking straight into her terrified eyes.

"The report that claimed Luca was permanently sterile after his car accident."

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the high-powered room.

Senior directors who had served the Varenna family for thirty years pushed back their chairs, staring at Marcus in utter disbelief.

"This is absurd!" Julian shouted, jumping to his feet to defend his father.

"Dr. Sterling is a respected chief of trauma! You have no proof of medical tampering!"

Dr. Finch stepped forward, opening his leather portfolio and sliding twelve identical forensic certificates across the table.

"I am Dr. Alistair Finch, former Chief Medical Examiner of Massachusetts," Finch announced in a clear, resonant voice.

"At two-thirty this morning, under certified chain-of-custody protocols witnessed by Detective Miller,"

"I conducted a comprehensive endocrine, genetic, and motility analysis on Chairman Luca Varenna."

"His biological reproductive capacity is in the upper ten percent of healthy adult males."

"The original diagnosis presented by Victor Sterling was an intentional, fraudulent misrepresentation of a minor temporary contusion."

Marcus stumbled backward, his thighs hitting his heavy leather chair, his face draining of every single drop of color.

"And furthermore," Dr. Finch continued, pointing directly at Diane,

"A secondary toxicological screening conducted on Evelyn Varenna revealed systemic levels of concentrated copper gluconate and pennyroyal extract."

"Substances known to induce chemical termination of pregnancy."

"Substances that Massachusetts State Police recovered two hours ago from Diane Varenna's private pantry in the north wing."

Diane let out a choked, blood-curdling shriek, her knees giving out beneath her as she collapsed back onto her chair.

"She's lying! She brought those herbs into the house herself!" Diane wailed, clutching her lawyer’s arm.

"The state forensic unit matched the lot numbers on the extraction vials to your personal pharmaceutical delivery from Munich, Diane," Detective Miller said, stepping forward with handcuffs in his hand.

"Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
