Chapter 3 - The Slow Poison

Luca’s head snapped up, his eyes instantly turning from sorrow to lethal focus.

"Toxicology? I asked for a prenatal panel, Alistair. Why did you run toxins?"

"Because when a pregnant woman faints and experiences violent nausea at the mere scent of cooked food at eight weeks," Dr. Finch replied, pulling up a mass-spectrometer graph,

"A prudent pathologist checks for environmental contaminants."

I leaned forward, my stomach clenching as a cold wave of dread washed down my spine.

"What did you find, Dr. Finch?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Finch pointed to a distinct molecular spike highlighted in bright amber on the screen.

"Copper gluconate and concentrated pennyroyal extract."

"In trace, microscopic quantities, it produces severe gastric spasms, uterine irritability, and mimicking symptoms of extreme morning sickness."

"In higher doses over three or four consecutive weeks," Finch looked directly into my eyes,

"It causes an unavoidable, spontaneous abortion that presents clinically as a natural miscarriage."

The room seemed to drop into an arctic void.

Luca stepped around the counter, gripping the edge of the monitor until the plastic housing groaned.

"Where would she ingest that, Alistair?" Luca demanded, his voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register that made captains across the Eastern Seaboard hold their breath.

"It is fat-soluble and virtually tasteless," Finch explained, looking at me.

"It is commonly dissolved in herbal teas, morning broths, or specific dietary supplements."

My hands flew to my mouth as the memories of the last three weeks flashed through my mind like a horror film.

Every morning at eight o'clock, Diane, Luca’s stepmother, had personally sent a porcelain pot of imported lavender-chamomile tea up to my suite.

“A young bride under stress needs proper herbal relaxation, darling,” Diane had purred with that aristocratic smile.

“The Varenna family expects our ladies to maintain perfect composure.”

Diane had noticed my fatigue two weeks ago.

She had suspected I was pregnant before I even took the digital test in the bathroom.

She had been poisoning my morning tea to kill Luca’s unborn child before he could ever discover his own fertility.

"Diane," I choked out, tears of horror finally spilling over my lashes.

"She sent me tea every morning from her private pantry."

Luca didn't shout.

He didn't punch the wall.

He went completely, terrifyingly still, the kind of stillness that precedes a hurricane.

He reached out, pulling me gently against his broad chest, his arm wrapping around my shoulders like an iron band.

"She knew," Luca murmured into my hair, his voice vibrating with lethal certainty.

"The moment you threw up at the dinner table tonight, she realized the dosage wasn't working fast enough."

"That’s why Marcus insisted on scheduling the annual trust executive summit for tomorrow afternoon."

"They wanted to force through the secondary succession vote before you showed any visible signs."

He pulled back, cupping my face with both of his large, calloused hands, wiping away my tears with his thumbs.

"Listen to me, Evelyn," Luca said, his eyes burning with an unshakeable, fierce vow.

"You and this baby are the only real family I have left in this world."

"They stole my youth. They stole twelve years of my dignity."

"Now they tried to murder my child."

"Tomorrow afternoon, we walk into the Varenna boardroom together."

"And we burn their entire empire down to the bedrock."
