Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vultures

The boardroom descended into pure, unadulterated chaos.
Julian lunged across the table toward his father's files, desperate to snatch the offshore wire confirmations.
Before his fingers could touch the paper, Luca crossed the floor in two blindingly fast strides.
His hand clamped around Julian’s silk necktie like an iron vice, slamming him backward onto the mahogany surface.
Coffee cups shattered, pens rolled across the floor, and three directors jumped out of their seats in sheer terror.
"You knew, Julian," Luca whispered, his face inches from his cousin's pale, sweating forehead.
"You sat at my Thanksgiving table for twelve years, pretending to look up to me, while you waited for my clock to run out."
"Luca... please... I didn't know about the poison! I swear to God, I didn't know about the tea!" Julian choked out, tears of pure, unvarnished panic streaming down his cheeks.
"My father told me you agreed to the succession! He said you didn't want the burden!"
"Get your hands off my son!" Marcus roared, raising his mahogany gavel to strike Luca's arm.
Detective Miller and his partner moved instantly, grabbing Marcus by both wrists, twisting his arms behind his back and forcing him down onto the table.
"Marcus Varenna, you are under arrest for corporate racketeering, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and felony falsification of medical records," Miller stated flatly.
The metallic snap of heavy steel handcuffs echoed across the vast boardroom like a gunshot.
Diane wept hysterically as two female officers pulled her up from her chair, her designer tweed rumpled and stained with coffee.
"Luca, think about the family name!" Marcus begged, his cheek pressed flat against the wood, his patrician dignity completely demolished.
"If this goes to trial, the stock will crater! The Boston press will tear us to pieces!"
"The family name was destroyed the day you put a price tag on my blood, Marcus," Luca replied, releasing Julian's tie with cold disgust.
He turned toward the remaining sixteen directors, who sat frozen in their seats, terrified of being linked to the conspiracy.
"Under Section 12 of the Varenna Trust Charter," Luca announced, his voice ringing with absolute, imperial authority,
"Any trustee or beneficiary convicted of criminal acts against the direct lineage forfeits all shares, all dividends, and all succession rights in perpetuity."
"Their equity is hereby confiscated and returned to the primary family treasury."
He reached out, taking my hand in his, interlacing his fingers with mine, holding our joined hands high above the center of the table.
"And as for the bloodline clause," Luca said, looking around the room with eyes full of fierce, unshakeable pride.
"My wife, Evelyn Varenna, is carrying the next Chairman of the Varenna Group."
"The succession is secure."

"Now get these parasites out of my sight."
The state troopers dragged Marcus, Diane, and Julian out through the double doors, their screams of denial echoing down the marble corridor until the elevator doors clicked shut.
