Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

At two o'clock the following afternoon, the top floor of the Varenna Tower overlooking Boston Common was an armed camp of corporate wealth.

Twenty-four executive directors, senior maritime partners, and corporate attorneys sat around the fifty-foot walnut conference table.

At the head of the table sat Marcus Varenna, a silver-haired, patrician man of sixty-two wearing a bespoke three-piece pinstripe suit.

Beside him sat his son Julian, thirty-two, looking bored and arrogant as he twirled an expensive platinum fountain pen.

On the opposite side sat Diane, dressed in immaculate ivory Chanel tweed, sipping black coffee and whispering with her personal estate lawyer.

On the central agenda screen, the primary resolution glowed in crisp blue text:

Item 4: Ratification of Perpetual Succession Covenant — Transfer of Controlling Equity to Branch B (Julian Varenna).

"Gentlemen," Marcus began, clearing his throat and tapping his gavel lightly against the wood.

"Under our founding trust covenants, the sitting chairman, Luca Varenna, has reached his thirty-fifth year without biological issue."

"Given the tragic, permanent medical realities established twelve years ago by our chief medical advisor, Dr. Sterling,"

"It is our fiduciary duty to stabilize the shipping and hotel operations by confirming Julian as primary heir-apparent."

"We will now call for a formal voice vote—"

The heavy double mahogany doors at the rear of the boardroom burst open with a booming crash.

Every head at the table jerked around in shock.

Luca strode into the room, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his shoulders thrown back, radiating an aura of untouchable, terrifying power.

Beside him walked me, wearing a high-collared navy silk sheath dress that subtly highlighted the gentle curve of my stomach.

Behind us walked Dr. Alistair Finch, accompanied by two uniformed Massachusetts State Police detectives and a federal court bailiff.

Diane’s coffee cup clattered against her saucer, splashing dark liquid across her manicured fingers.

Julian froze mid-twirl, his fountain pen slipping from his hand and rolling across the table.

Marcus scowled, standing up from his chair with indignant, manufactured authority.

"Luca! What is the meaning of this interruption?" Marcus barked, his face darkening with anger.

"This is an executive session of the trust! You cannot bring outside police officers and your little charity wife into a confidential board meeting!"

May you like

"Sit down, Marcus," Luca said, his voice quiet, low, and slicing through the grand room like a newly honed straight razor.

"Before you commit felony wire fraud and corporate treason in front of two state investigators."
