Chapter 6 - Dismantling the Conspiracy

The color instantly drained from Victor Sterling’s face. Beside him, Marcus Vance stiffened, his arrogant smirk instantly replaced by sheer terror.
""What is the meaning of this?"" Arthur Sterling demanded, looking around the room in utter confusion. ""This is a private corporate shareholder meeting!""
""It was supposed to be a corporate heist, Arthur,"" I said, walking slowly to the center of the table. I didn't look at Victor, and I didn't look at Vance. I kept my eyes fixed on Claire’s face on the screen. ""Claire, I know you despise me. I know that after what I did, I don't deserve to breathe the same air as you or our children. I will accept whatever divorce settlement you want. I will give you every single penny I have ever earned. But before you cast your vote today, you need to know who really attacked our family.""
With a nod to Mateo, the room's main presentation screen flickered.
The cloud audio recording began to play.
“It's done, Marcus. I took the doctor's call and told him Adrian was busy screwing me... Claire will never forgive him now...”
Sienna’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged boardroom with terrifying clarity, followed by Marcus Vance’s gloating response.
Claire’s hand flew to her mouth on the screen. A sharp gasp escaped her lips, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she stared at the lawyer she had trusted to protect her.
""Turn that off!"" Marcus Vance screamed, lunging toward the control console, but a U.S. Marshal shoved him back into his chair with a heavy hand.
""There's more,"" I said quietly.
Mateo pulled up the offshore bank transfers, the insider trading records showing Victor Sterling shorting Knox Dynamics stock forty-eight hours before my trip, and the contracts proving Sienna had been recruited eighteen months ago specifically to entrap me and trigger the fidelity clause.
""My God,"" Arthur Sterling whispered, turning slowly to look at his brother Victor. ""Victor... you did this? You orchestrated an attack on your own niece while she was carrying twins?""
""He's lying! It's a fabrication!"" Victor yelled, sweat beading heavily on his forehead. ""Adrian Knox is a serial cheater who is fabricating evidence to save his skin!""
""The subpoenas are already executed, Mr. Sterling,"" the federal prosecutor stated firmly. ""Sienna Vance was arrested thirty minutes ago at her townhouse. She has already agreed to a full proffer agreement in exchange for leniency. She surrendered her encrypted phones, her communications with both Marcus Vance and Victor Sterling, and the full paper trail of the Miami penthouse transaction.""
Marcus Vance buried his face in his hands, trembling violently.
""Marcus Vance,"" the lead marshal said, stepping forward with handcuffs. ""You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice.""
The click of the steel handcuffs echoed like a gunshot in the silent room. Within minutes, both Marcus Vance and Victor Sterling were being read their Miranda rights and led away in chains, past the stunned members of the board.
Arthur Sterling slumped back in his chair, utterly defeated and sickened by his brother's betrayal.
The room emptied as board members and corporate counsel quickly excused themselves to deal with the fallout. Only Mateo, Arthur, and I remained.
And Claire, still watching from the video screen.
She sat motionless in the hospital room, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks. She wasn't looking at the documents or the empty chairs where the conspirators had sat. She was looking at me.
""Adrian,"" she whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of raw grief and lingering shock.
""Claire,"" I said, my voice barely audible. I stepped closer to the screen, falling to my knees right in front of the camera, looking up at her with tears blurring my vision. ""I am not here to make excuses. Sienna was a plant, yes. Marcus and Victor set me up, yes. But I went to Miami. I bought that penthouse. I stayed when I should have been on that plane coming home to you. That was my weakness. That was my arrogance. That was my betrayal. You have every right to hate me for the rest of your life.""
Claire closed her eyes, a sob tearing through her chest.
May you like
""I don't care about the company, Claire,"" I choked out, the tears streaming down my face. ""Keep the voting shares. Keep every dollar of the Knox family assets. Give it all to Ethan and Eva. Just... please tell me our daughter is going to be okay. Please tell me she's breathing.""
Claire opened her eyes, looking down at me through the screen, her gaze filled with an ocean of sorrow.
