Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

For the next eighteen hours, I didn't sleep a second. Working out of Mateo's unmarked office in an industrial park, we pulled every digital thread, every wire transfer, and every hidden shell company tied to Victor Sterling, Marcus Vance, and Sienna.

While they thought I was cowering in shame, broken by the scandal, I was doing what I did best: hunting financial predators.

By 4:00 a.m. the following morning, we had uncovered the smoking gun. The Biscayne Bay penthouse hadn't just been bought with my money; Marcus Vance had acted as the undisclosed escrow agent, taking a $1.2 million illegal kickback through an unlicensed trust. Furthermore, Victor Sterling had shorted Knox Dynamics stock two days before the Miami trip using non-public insider knowledge of the impending marital collapse—a blatant, federal-level violation of securities laws.

Most crucially, we recovered the audio recording from Sienna’s own cloud-synced security system in her townhouse. At 3:45 a.m. on the night my twins were born, she had called Marcus Vance:

“It's done, Marcus. I took the doctor's call and told him Adrian was busy screwing me. The doctor is furious; he logged it in the official hospital record. Claire will never forgive him now. Make sure my deed is cleared first thing in the morning.”

To which Marcus Vance had replied:

“Brilliant work, little sister. By the time Adrian figures out what hit him, Victor will own Knox Dynamics, and Adrian will be living off whatever crumbs the court throws him.”

I stared at the audio wave on the monitor. It was the complete, undeniable proof of a criminal conspiracy to commit wire fraud, securities fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and corporate espionage.

""Do we take this to the FBI?"" Mateo asked, lighting a cigarette.

""Not yet,"" I replied, grabbing my coat. ""The FBI takes months. The board meeting to approve Victor's buyout is at 9:00 a.m. today. And Claire is scheduled to appear via secure video link from the recovery center to cast her fifty-two percent proxy vote.""

""What are you going to do?""

""I'm going to walk into that boardroom and destroy them in front of my wife,"" I said. ""And then I'm going to face whatever punishment Claire decides I deserve.""

At 8:50 a.m., I arrived at Knox Dynamics Tower. This time, I didn't arrive alone. Walking beside me were two federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, accompanied by four armed U.S. Marshals holding sealed grand jury subpoenas.

When we stepped out onto the 60th floor, the executive reception area fell dead silent. The receptionist gasped, dropping her phone. The two private security guards who had escorted me out yesterday took one look at the federal badges displayed by the marshals and immediately stepped aside.

I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the boardroom.

The entire board was seated. At the center of the table was Victor Sterling, his face flushed with triumph as he prepared to call the vote. Beside him sat Marcus Vance, smugly reviewing a stack of proxy documents. On the large high-definition video wall at the end of the room was Claire.

My heart shattered the moment I saw her on the screen.

She was sitting in a hospital armchair, wrapped in a soft gray cardigan, her dark hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. She looked so frail, so pale, her eyes shadowed with exhaustion and unspeakable heartbreak. In the background of her video feed, I could see two clear plastic bassinets. In one of them, a tiny bundle wrapped in pink was sleeping peacefully under a monitoring sensor; in the other, a small bundle wrapped in blue shifted slightly.

My children. Ethan and Eva.

Claire’s eyes met mine through the camera. Her breath caught, her jaw tightening with pain and disbelief.

""Adrian?"" she whispered, her voice carrying through the room's surround-sound speakers. ""What are you doing here? I have a restraining order! Arthur, remove him!""

May you like

""Security!"" Victor shouted, jumping to his feet, slamming his fists onto the table. ""Get this man out of here! He has no legal standing in this room! He has been stripped of his executive authority!""

""Sit down, Victor,"" one of the federal prosecutors barked, stepping forward and flashing his badge. ""United States Department of Justice. Nobody leaves this room, nobody touches a phone, and nobody casts a single vote.""
