Chapter 3 - The Scorpions Turn

Stripped of my badge, my company car, and my corporate cards, I took a cab to an upscale hotel downtown, only to find that my personal credit lines—all tied to the Knox family liquidity pool—had been temporarily frozen by a court-ordered asset freeze pending our divorce litigation.

I stood on the sidewalk in the drizzling rain, my tailored suit soaked, clutching my personal phone. I still had access to a private savings account at a regional bank with roughly three million dollars—chump change compared to the fortune I had wielded yesterday, but enough to fight.

I dialed my personal attorney, Gregory Ross.

""Adrian,"" Gregory answered on the first ring, sounding completely exhausted. ""I was just about to call you. Vance hit us with a legal blitzkrieg. They filed in family court, probate court, and the Delaware Court of Chancery simultaneously. Claire’s team has frozen thirty-two separate accounts.""

""I don't care about the accounts, Greg,"" I rasped, leaning against the cold stone facade of a building. ""I need the restraining order lifted. I have to see Ethan and Eva. I need to look Claire in the eye and beg for her forgiveness. How quickly can we get an emergency hearing?""

""We can't,"" Gregory said bluntly. ""Not with the evidence they submitted. Adrian, Vance submitted the audio recordings from the hospital. When the neonatologist called you to get emergency consent for Eva’s surfactant therapy, someone answered your phone, laughed, and hung up. Was that Sienna?""

A bucket of ice water crashed over my head. ""What?""

""At 3:28 a.m., Dr. Chen called your private line three times to get parental consent for an invasive lung procedure on your daughter,"" Gregory explained, his voice tight. ""On the third call, a woman answered, said 'Adrian is busy making me come, call back tomorrow,' and disconnected the line. They have the hospital switchboard recording, Adrian. The judge listened to it at six this morning. The judge was so disgusted he nearly issued a warrant for child endangerment. You're radioactive. No family court judge in the state will let you near those babies right now.""

My vision blurred. Sienna.

I remembered waking up briefly around 3:30 a.m. to the sound of my phone buzzing on the nightstand. Sienna had been out of bed, holding my phone by the balcony door. When I had asked her who it was, she had smiled softly, stroked my hair, and whispered, “Just your spam notifications, baby. Go back to sleep. I took care of it.”

She hadn't just seduced me; she had intentionally sabotaged my family. She had deliberately severed my last lifeline to my dying daughter to ensure my marriage would be permanently destroyed beyond repair.

""Greg,"" I said, my voice dangerously low. ""I'll call you back.""

I hailed another cab and gave the driver the address of Sienna’s luxury townhouse in the suburbs—the residence she still maintained while her Miami penthouse was being furnished.

Thirty minutes later, I kicked open the unlocked front door of her townhouse. The foyer was littered with designer shopping bags, luggage tags, and open bottles of champagne.

Sienna was in the living room, lounging on a velvet sofa, scrolling through her iPad while talking on speakerphone to a real estate broker.

""...yes, if we list the Biscayne property immediately, can we get twelve million in cash? I want a clean sale before any lis pendens can be filed by his wife's lawyers...""

She froze as she saw me standing in the doorway, soaked in rainwater, my eyes burning with a fury she had never seen before. She clicked the phone off and slowly sat up, pulling her silk robe tightly around herself.

""Adrian,"" she said, attempting to sound wounded. ""You startled me. You can't just barge in here like a maniac. I was just trying to protect our assets—""

""You answered my phone,"" I said, stepping forward. Each word was dropped like a lead weight. ""At 3:28 in the morning, while my daughter was choking on her own fluids, the doctor called for consent to save her life. You answered my phone, told the doctor I was busy having sex with you, and hung up.""

A momentary flicker of guilt flashed across her eyes, quickly replaced by defiant venom.

""She wasn't dying! It was just a stupid scare to drag you back to her!"" Sienna snapped, rising to her feet. ""Claire was using those babies as a leash to keep you under her thumb! I did what you were too weak to do! I cut the cord! You think you built an empire, Adrian? You're a coward who hid behind an eight-hundred-year-old family's money! I gave you passion! I gave you fire!""

""You gave me ruin,"" I whispered. ""And you used my children's lives as poker chips.""

""Well, guess what?"" Sienna sneered, stepping right into my face, her mask completely discarded. ""It worked! You're fired. You're broke. Claire owns you. But guess who owns that $11.8 million penthouse free and clear? Me. The deed is recorded. The title company confirmed it thirty minutes ago. It's irrevocable separate property. So go ahead, crawl back to your little saint of a wife. Tell her you gave her babies' inheritance to a twenty-nine-year-old girl who never loved you for a single second.""

She laughed—a sharp, shrill, triumphant sound.

I looked at the woman I had risked everything for. The illusion was gone. There was no beauty left in her face, only the hollow, predatory greed of a monster.

""You think that deed protects you?"" I said softly.

May you like

""The law says it does,"" she smirked.

""Then you don't know the first thing about how I do business,"" I replied.
