Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Shadows

I turned on my heel and walked out of the townhouse, ignoring her mocking laughter behind me. I didn't yell. I didn't break things. Rage was useless now. What I needed was absolute, cold-blooded retribution, followed by the impossible task of earning back the right to exist in the same world as my wife and children.
I didn't call another high-priced corporate lawyer. Instead, I called Mateo Kane.
Mateo was a former military intelligence operative who ran a private risk-mitigation firm that Knox Dynamics kept on a confidential retainer. He was the man who vetted foreign acquisitions, investigated industrial espionage, and uncovered corporate blackmail.
An hour later, I met Mateo in a dimly lit corner booth of an unpretentious diner on the outskirts of the city. He slid a steaming mug of black coffee toward me and sat down, his hardened face unreadable.
""I saw the news, Adrian,"" Mateo said quietly. ""You made a mess.""
""I made a catastrophic mistake,"" I admitted, my voice raw. ""I don't care about saving my reputation. I don't care about Knox Dynamics. I need two things, Mateo. First, I need to know where Claire and the twins are. I won't violate the restraining order—I swear to God I won't go near them. But I need to know they are safe, that Eva is getting the best medical treatment in the world, and that nothing can harm them.""
Mateo studied my face for a long, silent moment, searching for any sign of the arrogant billionaire who had strutted through life treating people like chess pieces. He must have seen whatever he was looking for, because he gave a slight nod.
""They're at St. Luke's Pediatric Recovery Center in Connecticut,"" Mateo said in a low voice. ""It’s a private, high-security facility. Eva was transferred there by medical transport at dawn. The top pediatric pulmonologist in North America is overseeing her recovery. Claire hasn't left her bedside. Arthur Sterling has armed executive protection guarding the perimeter. You can't get within two miles of that place without being detained, Adrian.""
A shuddering breath left my chest. ""She's with the best doctors? Eva is stable?""
""She's off oxygen support as of two hours ago,"" Mateo confirmed. ""She took her first bottle from Claire at noon. Ethan is healthy as an ox, sleeping in a bassinet right next to his sister.""
Tears pricked my eyes, but I swallowed them down. ""Thank God. Thank God.""
""Now,"" Mateo leaned in, resting his forearms on the table. ""What was the second thing?""
""Sienna Vale,"" I said, my voice turning to ice. ""I want to know everything. Who she talks to, who introduced her to me, where she came from. She played me too smoothly, Mateo. She had every move planned—the timing of the Miami trip, the exact property, the real estate closing right as Claire went into labor, intercepting the doctor's phone call. It was too precise to be spontaneous.""
Mateo permitted himself a faint, humorless smirk. ""You always were sharp when you weren't thinking with your ego, Adrian. Open this.""
He slid a manila folder across the Formica table.
I flipped it open. Inside were surveillance photographs, bank transfer statements, and encrypted chat logs.
My eyes scanned the first page, and my heart nearly stopped.
""Sienna Vale's real name is Sienna Vance,"" Mateo revealed. ""She is the younger half-sister of Marcus Vance—Claire’s lead divorce attorney.""
I stared at him, unable to process the words. ""Marcus Vance?""
""And that's not all,"" Mateo continued. ""Who do you think funded her initial lifestyle when she arrived in this city eighteen months ago? Look at page four.""
I flipped the page. Bank transfers totaling three hundred thousand dollars, originating from an offshore holding company registered in the Cayman Islands. The beneficial owner of the holding company was Victor Sterling—Arthur Sterling’s younger brother and the head of the rival faction within Claire’s family board.
""Victor Sterling wanted control of Knox Dynamics for five years,"" Mateo explained calmly. ""He knew you were ruthless in business, but vulnerable to vanity and praise. Sienna was planted at the charity gala where you met her. Every date, every demand, every emotional breakdown she staged was scripted. The goal was simple: trigger the Sterling infidelity clause, strip you of your super-voting equity, force a fire sale of your company shares to Victor's syndicate, and walk away with a multi-million-dollar real estate prize as her commission.""
I looked down at the photograph of Sienna laughing with Marcus Vance at a restaurant in London six months ago.
They hadn't just destroyed my marriage. They had turned my own stupidity into a weapon to disinherit my newborn twins and rob Claire of her family legacy. Claire didn't know. Claire genuinely believed I had simply abandoned her out of pure, callous lust. She had no idea she was being manipulated by her own uncle Victor to consolidate power over Knox Dynamics.
""Does Claire know this?"" I asked, my knuckles whitening against the edge of the table.
""Claire knows nothing,"" Mateo replied. ""She thinks Marcus Vance is her savior. She thinks her uncle Arthur and uncle Victor are protecting her from the monster she married. In twenty-four hours, Victor's syndicate will force a board vote to liquidate Knox Dynamics assets into his private fund, leaving Claire's trust with worthless, devalued paper.""

I closed the folder with a sharp snap. The despair that had paralyzed me for the last twelve hours vanished, burned away by a cold, calculating resolve.
""Mateo,"" I said, standing up. ""Call our private forensic auditors. We have twenty-four hours to dismantle an empire of scorpions.""
