Chapter 9 - The Long Road Back

The emergency wing of Boston General Hospital had been sealed off by private security for forty-eight hours.
Evelyn sat in a motorized wheelchair outside the intensive care unit, wearing a clean hospital gown, an intravenous drip line still attached to her forearm. Dr. Bennett, who had flown in from Maine alongside Gideon’s private medical staff, sat beside her, reviewing the latest fetal monitor strips.
""Baby Leo is completely fine, Evelyn,"" the doctor said gently, placing a comforting hand on her arm. ""Heart rate is one hundred and forty-five beats per minute. Strong, rhythmic, and healthy. Your stress levels are stabilizing.""
Evelyn nodded silently, her gaze locked through the glass window into room 402.
Gideon lay on the bed, surrounded by monitors and surgical drains. He had survived six hours of surgery to repair a shattered scapula and remove a bullet lodged perilously close to his spinal column.
He took the bullets for me, she thought, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it felt terrifying. Just like I took the flames for him.
There was no debt anymore. There was no ledger. There were only two people who had repeatedly thrown their bodies into the line of fire to keep the other alive.
The heavy double doors of the ICU opened, and the chief surgeon stepped out, removing his surgical mask.
""Mrs. Vale?""
Evelyn pushed the joystick forward, rolling up to him instantly. ""How is he?""
""He's awake,"" the surgeon smiled softly. ""He's stubborn as hell, if you'll pardon my French. He refused his post-operative sedative the moment he regained consciousness. Kept muttering that he had an appointment with his wife.""
Tears sprang into Evelyn’s eyes. She nodded to the nurse, who unlocked the electronic door.
The rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor filled the private room. Gideon turned his head slowly as the door clicked open. His face was pale, oxygen prongs resting under his nose, but when his eyes found hers, the monitor beside him immediately spiked in tempo.
""Evie,"" he rasped, his voice barely above a whisper.
Evelyn wheeled herself directly to the bedside. She didn't stay in the chair. Placing her hands firmly on the metal safety rail, she pushed herself up onto her feet.
Gideon’s eyes widened with anxiety. ""Don't... don't strain yourself...""
""Shut up, Gideon,"" she whispered tenderly.
She took two steady, deliberate steps, closing the distance between them, and carefully sat down on the edge of his mattress. She took his uninjured hand, bringing his cold fingers up to her lips and kissing every knuckle.
""You idiot,"" she whispered, her voice thick with love and reprimand. ""You could have died.""
Gideon’s fingers curled weakly around hers. ""If anything happened to you and the boy... I was already dead.""
He looked at her, his dark eyes brimming with unspeakable remorse. ""Evelyn, Blackridge is yours. The company, the estates, everything. I have already instructed my legal team to transfer every asset into an irrevocable trust in your name. If you want me to leave once our son is born... if seeing my face brings back the memory of what I said to Celeste... I will disappear. You will never have to see me again.""
Evelyn looked at him, running her thumb along his scarred cheekbone.
""I don't want your money, Gideon,"" she said softly. ""I never did. And I don't want you to disappear.""
Gideon froze, staring at her as if he dared not hope.
""I spent four months running because I thought you were keeping me out of pity,"" Evelyn continued, resting his hand against her belly, where their son gave a gentle, rolling kick against his palm. ""I won't be a debt to be paid. But if you're asking me to let you be a husband... if you're asking me to let you be Leo's father... then you better heal fast. Because I'm not carrying this baby up the stairs alone.""
A single, brilliant tear slipped from the corner of Gideon’s eye. He pulled her hand to his lips, kissing her palm with a reverence that felt like a sacred vow.

""I will build you an elevator in every room,"" he choked out, laughing through his tears. ""I will carry you across the world.""
""No,"" Evelyn smiled, leaning down until her forehead touched his. ""From now on, Gideon... we walk together.""
