Chapter 7 - The Unraveling Storm

Evelyn stared at the dossier on the table, then at the locket against Gideon's chest. Her hand remained over her stomach, feeling the erratic, nervous fluttering of their unborn son.
Outside, the Atlantic storm finally made landfall. Heavy rain lashed against the cottage windows, the wind howling around the eaves like a wounded beast.
""You should have told me,"" she said, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. ""You lived with me for six years, Gideon. You saw me struggle with my physical therapy. You saw me feel useless every time you carried me up those stairs. You let me believe I was a burden.""
""You were never a burden,"" Gideon said, stepping slowly toward her, his eyes locked on hers with a devotion so pure it was terrifying. ""You were the only sacred thing in my rotten, violent life. Every time I lifted you, I thanked God you were still in my arms. But I was a coward. I thought if I touched you like a real man touches his wife, you'd realize how broken our world was and walk away.""
He stopped two feet from her, sinking slowly back onto one knee. He looked up at her swollen belly, his breath trembling.
""May I?"" he asked, his voice barely audible over the roaring storm.
Evelyn looked down at him. The billionaire, the untouchable shadow of Blackridge, reduced to a shivering, rain-soaked man begging for a single touch. The hardness around her heart, carefully built over months of exile, began to fracture.
Slowly, she took a half-step forward and nodded.
Gideon reached out. His large, scarred hands, usually so steady and lethal, shook as he placed his warm palm gently against the curve of her dress.
At that exact second, the baby gave a sharp, definitive kick directly against his palm.
Gideon gasped. He pressed his forehead against her stomach, and the iron-willed titan of industry completely broke down. His shoulders shook as he wept openly, clutching the fabric of her dress like a drowning sailor finding a lifeline in an endless ocean.
""He's strong,"" Gideon wept against her skin. ""Evie… he's so strong.""
Evelyn's fingers hesitated in the air before slowly, instinctively sinking into Gideon's damp, dark hair. The familiar warmth of him, the intoxicating scent of cedarwood, rain, and raw masculine devotion, filled her senses.
""His name is Leo,"" she murmured, a stray tear falling onto his shoulder. ""After your grandfather.""
Gideon lifted his head, his face wet with tears, looking at her as if she were an angel offering salvation to a condemned soul. ""Come home with me, Evelyn. Please. Let me spend every remaining hour of my life proving to you that you are my only love.""
Before Evelyn could answer, the roar of a high-powered engine pierced through the sound of the rain outside.
Tires screeched on the wet gravel.
Gideon’s head snapped up. In less than a second, the weeping husband vanished, replaced by the lethal predator whose instincts had kept him alive through decades of corporate and street warfare.
He rose swiftly, placing his body entirely between Evelyn and the front door, pulling a customized handgun from his concealed shoulder holster with fluid speed.
""Hayes!"" Gideon called out sharply.
No response came from the driveway.

Through the sheer curtains of the living room, Evelyn saw two dark sedans blocking Gideon’s SUVs. Men in heavy raincoats stepped out, armed with submachine guns.
The remnants of the Vance cartel had tracked Gideon’s flight.
