Chapter 6 - The Truth in the Rain

""Gideon,"" she whispered. The mug in her hand trembled, tea sloshing against the rim.
He couldn't speak. A massive, suffocating lump rose in his throat, choking off all breath.
He saw her standing on her own two feet. He saw her belly. The ultrasound photo he had carried in his breast pocket for four months suddenly felt searing hot against his ribs.
""Evie,"" he choked out, his voice breaking into a ragged sob.
He took a step forward, completely unconscious of the rain dripping from his soaked coat onto the hardwood floor.
""Don't,"" Evelyn said, her voice rising with an icy steel that stopped him instantly. She shifted her weight, gripping the edge of the kitchen counter. ""Don't come any closer, Gideon. How did you find me?""
Gideon looked at her, his eyes wild with grief, adoration, and sheer disbelief. ""The wheelchair. In the local paper. Evelyn… you walked. You're standing.""
""I took two steps to save a child,"" she replied coldly, her chin lifting defiantly. ""My nerves are healing. But don't think for a single second that this changes anything between us.""
Gideon slowly dropped to his knees.
The mighty Gideon Vale, whose name made wall-street financiers tremble and underworld figures step out of the way, knelt on the worn floorboards of a humble fisherman’s cottage, bowing his head before her.
""Gideon, stop it,"" Evelyn said, her voice wavering. ""Get up. I don't want your theatrics.""
""I am not performing, Evie,"" he said, looking up at her with tears streaming unchecked down his rugged face. ""I will stay on this floor for the rest of my life if it means you'll let me breathe the same air as you.""
""Why?"" Evelyn snapped, her composure cracking as anger surged through her veins. ""To pay the debt? To balance the ledger? How much is a son worth to you, Gideon? Does carrying your child pay off the remaining balance of the spine I broke pulling you out of that car fire?!""
Gideon flinched as if she had struck him across the face with an iron bar.
""What are you talking about?"" he whispered, horrified.
""I was at your door!"" Evelyn cried out, the pain of four months of isolation exploding into the quiet room. ""Five weeks and four days! I had the ultrasound in my hands! I came to your office to tell you that we were finally going to be a family, and I heard you! I heard Celeste ask why you were still married to me!""
Gideon’s face went paper-white.
""And you answered her,"" Evelyn sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. ""'I owe her my life. Not my love.' You told her I was an obligation. You let her touch you. You wrapped your arms around her!""
""No,"" Gideon said, his voice rising in desperate agony as he scrambled up from the floor, holding his hands out in surrender, not daring to touch her without permission. ""No, Evie, listen to me! You heard the beginning of a conversation that ended in blood!""
""I saw enough!""
""You saw a trap!"" Gideon roared, pulling the soaked envelope from his interior pocket and throwing it onto the table alongside a thick, bound police dossier. ""Read it! Read every damn page! Celeste had been approached by the Vance cartel six months ago. They wanted leverage over my holdings. She brought a concealed wire into my office that day to record me admitting infidelity so they could force a settlement through the courts!""
Evelyn froze, her breath hitching.
""I knew the room was compromised the moment she stepped inside,"" Gideon continued, his hands trembling violently. ""I told her I owed you my life to establish that Blackridge was non-negotiable. And when she touched me, I caught her wrist to pull the wire out of her collar! I threw her out into the hall three seconds after you left!""
Evelyn stared at him, her chest heaving. ""You… you held her.""
""I was disarming her, Evelyn!"" Gideon choked out, taking a step closer, his eyes pleading for mercy. ""And when I found your note… when I found that picture… my world died. I haven't slept in four months. I destroyed the Vance cartel. I ruined Celeste’s entire family. I haven't stepped inside our bedroom since the day you left because the smell of your absence makes it impossible to breathe!""

He reached into his shirt, pulling out a chain around his neck. Dangling beside his family signet ring was a small, laminated copy of the five-week ultrasound photo.
""I don't love you out of debt, Evelyn,"" he whispered, his voice cracking into fragments. ""I fell in love with you three years before the crash, when you were just an architect presenting blueprints for the harbor redevelopment. I was just too arrogant and too terrified of my own darkness to admit it. And after you saved me… after I saw what my enemies did to your body… I thought I was a monster who had ruined your life. I treated you like glass because I hated myself for what you sacrificed!""
