Chapter 2 - Vanishing into the Shadows

Two hundred miles away, the small coastal town of Oakhaven lay shrouded in a thick midnight fog. The rhythm of crashing Atlantic waves provided a steady, somber lullaby outside a modest, single-story weatherboard cottage.

Evelyn Vale sat by the window in the dark, watching the headlights of an occasional fishing truck sweep across the ceiling.

Her left shoulder throbbed from the effort of pulling her compact luggage inside. For six years, she had lived inside a gilded birdcage where three attendants waited on her every gesture. If a glass of water was out of reach, a butler fetched it. If she needed to transfer from her chair to the sofa, Gideon was there, scooping her up in his powerful arms as if she weighed less than a feather, kissing her temple, murmuring that she never had to strain herself again.

A debt.

Hot tears finally tracked down Evelyn's cheeks, burning her skin. She wiped them away furiously with the sleeve of her oversized woolen sweater.

""I won't cry for him,"" she whispered to the empty room, resting her hand flat against her lower belly. ""Not anymore.""

She had believed in his quiet devotion. When he refused lavish galas to spend rainy evenings sitting beside her fireplace reading aloud, she had thought it was tenderness. When he brought her custom jewelry engraved with ivy leaves—the symbol of endurance—she had thought he treasured her soul.

Now she knew the truth. It was all penance. He was paying off an emotional mortgage, balancing the ledger of blood and crushed bone she had paid to keep his heart beating.

And then Celeste had asked the question that stripped away the illusion entirely.

If you don't love Evelyn, why are you still married to her?

I owe her my life. Not my love.

Evelyn swallowed down the knot in her throat. She had left before he could find out about the baby. If Gideon discovered she was carrying his child, his suffocating sense of duty would have multiplied tenfold. He would have chained her to Blackridge with an army of nurses and bodyguards, keeping her trapped in a hollow, loveless marriage forever out of sheer obligation.

Her child would never grow up watching its mother wither under the cold charity of an indifferent father.

Reaching into her small medical bag, Evelyn retrieved her prenatal vitamins. She swallowed one with a sip of tap water.

Tomorrow morning, she had an appointment with a local clinic under her maiden name, Evelyn Cross. The money she had used was inherited from her grandmother—a modest account kept separate from the Vale financial empire. It wasn't billions, but it was enough to rent this seaside cottage, buy groceries, and cover basic obstetrics for the next year.

Her laptop sat closed on the small dining table. She had intentionally removed the wireless card. She knew Gideon’s resources; he possessed cyber-surveillance capabilities that rivaled government intelligence agencies. The slightest digital footprint would summon a fleet of black SUVs to her front lawn before dawn.

Outside, the wind howled against the coastal bluffs. Evelyn reached down, taking a deep breath, and began massaging her dormant thighs. The tingling sensation was faint, but it was there—a sensation that had quietly begun returning three weeks ago, though she had kept it a secret, hoping to surprise Gideon on their upcoming anniversary.

""Everything changes now,"" she whispered to the tiny life inside her. ""It's just you and me.""
