Chapter 8 - The Fall Of Bennett Harbor

By mid-January, the collapse of Bennett Harbor Logistics dominated the business headlines across New England.
Federal maritime regulators descended upon the company headquarters, seizing servers, ledgers, and correspondence dating back seven years. Howard Bennett was forced to resign in disgrace after forensic audits revealed five million dollars in embezzled pension funds.
Grant sat in a cramped, rented conference room across from a panel of forensic accountants and bankruptcy trustees.
His designer suits now looked rumpled and ill-fitting; dark purple circles underlined his bloodshot eyes. He had lost thirty pounds in six weeks, living on black coffee and diner takeout while his assets vanished.
"Mr. Bennett, your signature appears on forty-two fraudulent routing slips that diverted corporate funds to private offshore entities," the lead trustee stated flatly.
"Those accounts were cleared out by the receivership trust on December 25th to pay off employee pensions and harbor maintenance."
"I don't care about the accounts," Grant said, his voice stripped of all former arrogance.
"Where is my family?"
"Mrs. Bennett has secured a permanent protective order through the state family court," his own defense lawyer whispered beside him.
"All parental communication is suspended pending the completion of the federal grand jury investigation. You cannot contact her."
Grant stared down at the polished table, remembering the last conversation he had with Claire in their warm kitchen.
She had stood there patiently, thirty-four weeks pregnant, offering him one last chance to stay and be a father. He had traded that priceless loyalty for a glamorous dinner and an empty flirtation in a Manhattan hotel room.
Later that afternoon, Grant walked past his former office tower in downtown Boston.
Workmen were already unscrewing the brass letters of the Bennett family name from the granite entrance facade. A group of dockworkers walked past him, laughing and discussing their newly secured union retirement packages, saved entirely by Claire’s forensic restructuring.

Brooke Mercer had relocated to Miami to avoid subpoenas, refusing to answer any of Grant’s desperate calls or text messages.
She had blocked his number the moment his credit cards declined at the SoHo hotel checkout counter. He was entirely alone in the city he once thought he owned, surrounded by ghosts of his own making.
