Chapter 7 - A New Coast

Two thousand miles away, the private charter jet touched down gently on the sunny tarmac of Savannah, Georgia.

The morning air outside was crisp, smelling of salt marsh, pine needles, and sweet southern earth instead of freezing diesel exhaust. Claire stepped down the mobile staircase, holding Ethan’s hand securely in hers as he rubbed his eyes awake.

"Mommy, is this the North Pole?" Ethan asked, looking around at the moss-draped live oak trees bordering the runway.

"No, sweetheart," Claire smiled, crouching down to adjust his jacket. "This is our new home. Reindeer prefer colder weather, but Santa knew where to drop our boxes."

Arthur Bell’s sister, a retired pediatrician named Martha, was waiting beside a vintage blue station wagon with a warm thermos of cocoa.

She embraced Claire gently, mindful of the baby bump, and handed Ethan a gingerbread cookie shaped like a sea turtle.

"Everything is set up at the cottage on St. Simons Island, Claire," Martha said warmly.

"The nursery is painted soft yellow, and the local obstetrics team is already briefed on your records."

"Thank you, Martha. I couldn't have managed this without your family," Claire said, exhaling a breath she felt she had held for three years.

They drove down winding coastal roads lined with towering palmettos and quiet marshlands, far away from the corporate warfare in Boston.

Ethan pointed excitedly out the window at pelicans skimming across the sunlit water, completely oblivious to the financial catastrophe left in their wake. For him, this was simply an unexpected holiday adventure.

When they arrived at the whitewashed cottage, Claire walked into the airy kitchen bathed in golden morning light.

A fresh basket of fruit sat on the counter, and soft breezes drifted through the open porch screens. For the first time in months, the heavy tightness in her chest dissolved into peaceful relief.

She sat down on the porch swing, listening to the rhythmic murmur of the Atlantic tides.

Her unborn daughter kicked gently against her ribs, as if confirming that they had finally reached safe harbor. She pulled out her new, unlisted tablet and authorized Arthur to begin the formal corporate bankruptcy restructuring.
