Chapter 3 - Midnight Evacuation

Back at the suburban estate, the clock struck midnight as two unmarked black vans backed into the snow-covered driveway.
Arthur Bell stepped out of the passenger side, wrapped in a heavy trench coat and carrying an expandable leather folder. Two professional movers followed behind him, moving with quiet efficiency into the front hallway.
"The snow is piling up fast, Claire," Arthur said as he entered the foyer.
"We need to get you to the airport hangar before the state police shut down the turnpike."
"Ethan is still asleep," Claire said softly, wrapping a thick wool scarf around her neck.
"I’ll carry him to the car so he doesn't wake up until we land."
The movers carefully loaded the locked boxes of audit files, accounting ledgers, and Claire's personal belongings into the back of the van.
These weren't just household goods; they were the complete corporate records of Bennett Harbor Logistics spanning fifteen years. Claire had personally digitized every single fraudulent transaction Grant and Howard had executed since 2018.
"Did Howard call you?" Claire asked, adjusting her coat over her thirty-four-week belly.
"His lawyers have tried my office seven times in the last twenty minutes," Arthur chuckled dryly. "They’re realizing that their entire empire sits on land owned exclusively by your family trust."
"Grant never read the master lease," Claire said, looking around the empty rooms.
"He assumed that being married to me meant the ground beneath his feet was his by default."
She walked into the living room one last time to look at the decorated tree.
Ethan's neat piles of wrapping paper still sat on the carpet, undisturbed and bright under the twinkling lights. She picked up a single hand-painted ornament that Ethan had made in preschool, slipped it into her pocket, and turned off the tree lights.
At 1:15 AM, Claire lifted her sleeping son into her arms.
Ethan stirred slightly, resting his warm cheek against her shoulder, murmuring about reindeer before drifting back into a deep sleep. She carried him out into the cold winter air and placed him securely into the heated back seat of the SUV.

As the heavy iron gates swung closed behind them, Claire did not look back in the rearview mirror.
She checked her tablet one final time, watched the digital signatures finalize on the terminal closure orders, and powered off her old phone forever.
