Chapter 5 - An Empty House

Grant’s SUV skidded to a halt in the driveway of their estate at 4:45 AM, throwing slush against the manicured shrubs.

The front doors were unlocked, swinging slightly in the winter wind as snow drifted across the marble entryway. Grant sprinted inside, shouting Claire’s name into the echoing darkness of the cavernous home.

"Claire! Ethan!"

Silence answered him, heavy and suffocating.

The living room fire was long dead, leaving cold gray ashes in the hearth. The smell of roasted rosemary and garlic still lingered faintly in the air, a haunting reminder of the Christmas Eve dinner he had abandoned.

He bounded up the stairs two at a time, his heart hammering violently against his ribs.

Ethan’s room was completely stripped of toys, clothes, and bedding, leaving only the bare mattress on the wooden frame. The colorful scraps of red and green wrapping paper had been thrown into the wastebasket.

Grant stumbled back down the hallway into the master bedroom.

Claire’s closet doors stood wide open, showing bare hangers swaying in the draft. Her jewelry boxes were gone, her passport was missing from the safe, and her prenatal vitamins were swept clean from the vanity.

On the dining room table, the three place settings remained exactly as Claire had set them the previous evening.

Next to his plate lay a single white business envelope addressed to him in Claire’s neat, unmistakable handwriting. With shaking fingers, Grant tore open the paper and read the brief, typed lines inside:

Grant,

You thought you were choosing Brooke tonight, but you were actually choosing an illusion.

You traded the family that built you for someone who only loves the salary my father gave you.

By sunrise, the port authorities will serve the formal receivership order. You have thirty days to vacate the harbor headquarters.

Do not attempt to locate us. My legal team handles all future communications regarding custody and liquidation.

Merry Christmas.

May you like

Underneath the letter lay her wedding ring, catching the gray light of the rising winter dawn.

Grant fell to his knees on the cold hardwood floor, clutching the single piece of paper as the devastating reality collapsed upon his shoulders. He had everything a man could dream of at five o'clock yesterday, and by dawn, he was left with nothing but an empty house.
