Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Panic

At 3:30 AM on Christmas morning, Grant Bennett was speeding north on the icy interstate, leaving Brooke alone in the Manhattan penthouse.

His phone was ringing continuously on the dashboard console, alternating between Uncle Howard, the chief financial officer, and the regional port director. The heavy snow swirled blindingly in his headlights, but adrenaline kept his foot heavy on the gas.

"Howard, explain it to me in plain English!" Grant shouted into the hands-free speaker.

"How does an estate trust from ten years ago lock us out of our own docks?"

"Because your father-in-law wasn't an idiot, Grant!" Howard screamed back over the phone.

"He knew you were reckless with leverage. He put the port docking rights into Claire’s name with an automatic revocation clause if our debt-to-equity ratio crossed thirty percent!"

"Our ratio was twenty-two percent yesterday afternoon!"

"It was twenty-two percent before someone dumped all your secret offshore consulting invoices into the audit portal at midnight!"

Grant felt the blood drain completely from his face, leaving his hands freezing cold against the steering wheel.

The offshore invoices were supposed to be hidden behind four layers of shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. Only two people on earth had the decryption keys to those proprietary ledger programs: himself and Claire.

"She knew," Grant whispered to himself, the truth hitting him like a physical blow.

"She knew about everything all along."

"She didn't just know, you arrogant fool," Howard groaned. "She exercised her grandfather's reversionary lien. As of 2:00 AM, the harbor police have barricaded the cargo gates. No ships dock, no containers move, and three international freight carriers are preparing default lawsuits."

Grant slammed his hand against the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.

He remembered Claire standing in the foyer, her belly swollen with their second child, calmly telling him to go spend Christmas with Brooke. She hadn't been defeated; she had been clearing the room so she could detonate the bomb.

He pulled off the highway and tore through the snowy residential streets toward their gated community.

He didn't care about the company at that exact moment; he needed to see his son and regain control of his wife before dawn. He believed he could still charm her, apologize, lie, or beg until she signed the waivers.
