Chapter 8 - The Gatehouse at Sarah's

Forty miles away, in a modest brick home in Naperville, Hannah sat at her sister’s wooden kitchen table. A ceramic mug of herbal chamomile tea sat warming her hands.

Through the bay window, she watched Noah playing catch in the frosty backyard with his uncle. For the first time in three months, the boy looked ten years old again. The tense, watchful shadow that had haunted his eyes was finally beginning to lift.

The doorbell chimed softly.

Sarah entered the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel. She looked at Hannah with cautious eyes. ""He's outside. He's been standing on the curb for two hours in the snow.""

Hannah didn't move. ""Tell him to go home, Sarah.""

""Hannah, he’s wearing an open coat and no gloves,"" Sarah murmured gently, sitting across from her. ""The news hit the morning channels. Vanessa was indicted on federal wire fraud and identity theft charges. The press is calling Ethan’s office non-stop, but he left the city entirely. He didn't go to Caldwell Hall. He drove straight here.""

Hannah looked down at her swollen belly. She placed both palms over her daughter’s movements. ""A grand gesture doesn't erase three weeks of abandonment, Sarah. When I was crying in the middle of the night with contractions, he was attending a cocktail party in Mayfair.""

""I know,"" Sarah said softly. ""I'm not telling you to forgive him. God knows I wanted to hit him with a tire iron last night. But you need to see his face, Hannah. You need to say what you have to say to him, not to his memory.""

Hannah took a slow, steady breath. She stood up, wrapped her thick wool cardigan tight around herself, and walked to the front door.

When she opened it, the bitter November wind swept across the porch. Ethan was standing at the bottom of the porch steps, his shoes covered in slush, his face pale and chapped from the cold. He looked completely shattered—the immaculate billionaire reduced to a man on the edge of ruin.

He didn't try to climb the steps. He kept a respectful distance, his hands trembling at his sides.

""Hannah,"" he said, his voice raw. ""I brought the forensic reports. I brought the indictment records. Vanessa is in county custody. Mother has been stripped of the family trust authority.""

""I don't care about your money, Ethan,"" Hannah replied across the cold air. ""I never did. That was always your mother's delusion, and apparently yours.""

""I know,"" Ethan choked out, taking a shuddering breath. ""I was an idiot. A blind, arrogant, cowardly idiot. I wanted to believe everything was fine because it was easier than facing the fact that I was failing as a husband.""

""You called me hysterical,"" Hannah said, her tears finally cutting hot tracks down her cheeks. ""You told me my pregnancy was making me see monsters.""

""And the monster was sitting right at my table,"" Ethan whispered, falling to his knees right there on the frozen suburban sidewalk. ""I don't expect you to come home, Hannah. If you want a divorce, I will sign whatever papers your attorney draws up. I will give you the house, the money, the land, everything. But please... please don't let our daughter grow up thinking her father didn't love her mother more than his own life.""
