Chapter 5 - Paper Trails and Shattered Trusts

Hannah and Noah left at half-past twelve. The rear lights of Sarah's SUV vanished down the long, snow-dusted driveway, leaving Ethan alone in an empty eighty-room mansion that suddenly felt like a tomb.
He didn't sleep. By two in the morning, Ethan was sitting in his downstairs office surrounded by file boxes and laptops. At three, his private investigator, Marcus Vance, arrived through the side entrance with two forensic digital analysts.
""I pulled the server logs from the company’s internal messaging network,"" Marcus said, laying a thick stack of folders across the glass desk. ""It's worse than what Noah caught on video, Ethan.""
Ethan rubbed his bloodshot eyes. ""Show me.""
""Vanessa created a secondary corporate entity registered in Delaware called 'Apex Asset Holdings.' Over the last six months, she systematically redirected three commercial land options out of Caldwell Developments and into Apex. But here's the kicker: she forged your digital signature on the power of attorney transfers while you were in Dubai last spring.""
Ethan stared at the contracts. His signature—exact, flawless, generated by an unauthorized cloning algorithm—was stamped across fifty pages of binding legal transfers.
""And your mother?"" Ethan asked, dreading the answer.
""Margaret didn't sign the corporate fraud,"" Marcus replied, leaning over the desk. ""She was just bitter and arrogant. Vanessa played on her snobbery. Vanessa told Margaret that Hannah was secretly consulting a high-profile divorce attorney in Chicago to take half the Caldwell family estate. Margaret honestly believed she was preserving the family money for Noah.""
""And the medical records?"" Ethan asked, remembering the doctor's phone call Vanessa had weaponized. ""How did she get Hannah’s obstetrician to call the corporate line?""
Marcus sighed, opening another file. ""She didn't. That wasn't Hannah’s doctor. Vanessa hired a local actress from an agency in Northbrook to call your executive assistant pretending to be Dr. Chen’s triage nurse. She orchestrated the entire narrative that Hannah was suffering from severe prenatal psychosis so that the board would approve an emergency personal leave for you—giving Vanessa sole proxy authority over the French deal.""
Ethan slumped back into his executive chair, staring up at the coffered oak ceiling. The sheer scale of the calculated malice made him sick to his stomach. While he had been congratulating himself on conquering Europe, two women in his inner circle had orchestrated a theatrical nightmare designed to strip his wife of her dignity, her children, and her sanity.
And he had validated them. He had sent those dismissive, patronizing texts. He had been the executioner's blunt instrument.

""Ethan?"" Marcus asked quietly. ""What do you want to do with the evidence?""
Ethan leaned forward, his eyes burning with an icy resolve. ""Call the District Attorney. Call the Securities and Exchange Commission. And file an immediate emergency petition for an ex-parte restraining order against Vanessa Reed. I want her stripped of every corporate credential before the market opens at nine.""
