Chapter 2 - The Archive of Deceit

The silence stretched so taut it threatened to snap. Noah didn't wait for his father to find words. The boy dragged his thumb across the glass, opening a hidden folder titled simply: Caldwell Hall Backup.
""There are twenty-two files,"" Noah stated matter-of-factly, tapping a video dated fourteen days prior.
The frame loaded instantly. The camera angle was lower this time, positioned between the books on the study shelf. Margaret Caldwell was sitting behind Ethan’s antique mahogany desk, holding a glass of scotch. Vanessa was pacing near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan.
""We have to execute the deed transfer before Ethan returns from Paris,"" Vanessa’s voice echoed from the tablet. ""The offshore trust in Zurich is already prepared. If Hannah signs the voluntary relinquishment of marital assets under the guise of an emotional wellness leave, Ethan won't have to split the lakeside parcel when he inevitably files.""
Margaret chuckled on the tape, a dry, raspy sound. ""Ethan is too soft-hearted when it comes to her. He’s always been weak for Hannah’s quiet little routine. But if we convince him she’s postpartum-depressed and unfit before the infant even arrives, he’ll do whatever the family attorneys recommend. He trusts you, Vanessa. He thinks you’re his greatest asset.""
""He thinks I’m indispensable,"" Vanessa replied on the recording, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across her lips. ""By the time he figures out the Lake Forest deed is held solely by our management group, Hannah will be living in an apartment in Milwaukee with a modest monthly allowance, and Noah will be enrolled in the boarding academy in Switzerland.""
At the dining table, Margaret’s glass slipped from her manicured fingers. It shattered against the hardwood floor, sending red wine splashing across the hem of Vanessa’s cream-colored trousers.
""Turn it off,"" Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. ""Ethan, it was a legal hypothetical! We were exploring asset protection structures! You know how volatile the European market has been!""
Ethan stood up. He was six-foot-two, athletic and broad-shouldered, but right now he moved with the terrifying, deliberate slowness of an avalanche gathering momentum. He didn't look at his mother. He stared straight at Vanessa.
""You told me that Noah had chosen to apply to Le Rosey in Switzerland,"" Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet. ""You told me he asked to go because Hannah was too distracted by the pregnancy to help him with his schoolwork.""
""He... he did express interest,"" Vanessa stammered, backing toward the dining room doorway. ""Ethan, look at the big picture. We just closed an eighty-million-dollar deal with the French consortium. Don't destroy everything we built over domestic drama orchestrated by a child.""
""A child?"" Noah interrupted, his chin held high. ""I heard you telling Grandma that when the baby girl was born, you’d make sure Mom never had custody because you knew a judge in Cook County who owed you a favor. I’m not stupid. I know how to set up motion cameras.""
Hannah slowly pushed back her chair. She stood, pressing one palm against her lower spine, breathing steadily. ""The baby is kicking,"" she said quietly to no one in particular. ""She’s been kicking all evening. Probably because she knows her father just sat here for twenty minutes wondering whether his business partner or his wife was telling the truth.""

""Hannah, please,"" Ethan begged, reaching across the space between them. The confident, brilliant CEO of Caldwell Developments was gone; in his place stood a man watching his world burn down around his ears. ""Please, let me fix this. Look at me.""
""Don't touch me, Ethan,"" Hannah said, taking a deliberate step backward out of his reach. ""You spent three weeks letting them bury me alive. You don't get to hold my hand while you inspect the grave.""
