Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Reckoning

With Vanessa behind bars awaiting a multimillion-dollar bail hearing, Ethan drove north to Lake Shore Drive.

Margaret Caldwell’s luxury penthouse was quiet. When the maid let Ethan into the sprawling drawing room, Margaret was sitting near the grand piano, looking frail in a cashmere dressing gown. Morning newspapers were scattered on the glass coffee table, with headlines already blaring Vanessa’s sudden arrest.

""Ethan,"" Margaret said, her voice trembling as she stood up. ""The news... it's horrifying. I had no idea she was transferring corporate deeds. I swear to you, darling, I only wanted—""

""Stop lying, Mother,"" Ethan said. He didn't sit down. He stood in the center of the room, looking down at the woman who had raised him to care more about pedigree and balance sheets than human decency.

""I didn't steal your money, Ethan!""

""No, you tried to steal my daughter,"" Ethan replied, his voice laced with profound disgust. ""Noah told me what you said to him when Hannah was resting upstairs. You told him that when the baby was born, you’d make sure she had a real Caldwell name, not some peasant Wisconsin name. You told him that Hannah wasn't smart enough to raise an heir.""

Margaret swallowed hard, turning her head away. ""Hannah was never suitable for you, Ethan. You needed a partner who understood power! Look at what she did over a few misunderstandings—she ran away to her sister’s little suburban bungalow!""

""That little suburban bungalow is the only place in the state of Illinois where my family feels safe right now,"" Ethan said.

He pulled an envelope from his interior pocket and placed it on the piano.

""What is that?"" Margaret asked, eyeing the paper warily.

""It is a legal notice of severance,"" Ethan said. ""The family trust has been restructured. The allowance you receive from the Caldwell Holdings dividend is being capped at the basic estate maintenance minimum. The penthouse remains yours, but you are barred from the corporate offices, Caldwell Hall, and any school functions involving Noah or my daughter.""

Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. ""You're cutting me off? I am your mother!""

""A mother doesn't try to strip her pregnant daughter-in-law of her custody rights,"" Ethan said fiercely. ""A mother doesn't celebrate when her son's marriage is falling apart. You wanted power, Margaret. Enjoy it in this empty apartment.""

Ethan turned on his heel. As he walked toward the elevator, his mother's frantic, sobbing voice echoed down the marble hallway, begging him to reconsider. He didn't turn back. For the first time in his thirty-nine years, the voice of Margaret Caldwell held no authority over him whatsoever.
