Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanessa Reed

By eight-thirty Monday morning, Caldwell Developments' corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago was crawling with federal agents and private security.
Vanessa stepped out of the private elevator on the forty-second floor, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit, carrying a fresh cup of artisan coffee. She had rehearsed her speech all night. She planned to confront Ethan, remind him of his fiduciary duties, and present him with an amended buyout clause that would force him to pay her out twenty million dollars to walk away quietly.
Instead, she stepped into the executive reception area and stopped dead.
Two armed federal marshals stood beside the glass entrance doors. Sitting on the lobby sofas were three senior investigators from the Cook County Financial Crimes Division.
Ethan was standing behind the reception desk, flanked by the firm’s chief legal officer and forensic auditor.
""Vanessa Reed,"" the lead investigator said, stepping forward with an open folder. ""We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, corporate forgery, and wire fraud.""
Vanessa spilled her coffee. The hot liquid splashed across the polished marble floor. ""What is this nonsense? Ethan, call off your security dogs! This is a workplace dispute!""
""It was a workplace dispute,"" Ethan said coldly, not moving an inch. ""Until you forged my name on three Delaware shell deeds. Until you bribed an actress to impersonate a medical professional to establish fraudulent grounds for an involuntary psychiatric hold on my pregnant wife.""
Vanessa's face went completely white. ""You don't have proof of that.""
""Noah gave me the cloud access keys,"" Ethan replied, his voice echoing across the open floor plan as dozens of employees peered out from their glass cubicles. ""He mirrored your company phone to the home network three weeks ago when you left it charging on the kitchen counter. We have the text messages to the actress. We have the offshore routing numbers. We have the audio files of you discussing the payoff with the title clerk.""
The marshals moved in. Vanessa backed away, but one of the officers swiftly grabbed her wrist, twisting her arm behind her back and clicking the steel cuff into place.

""You're a fool, Ethan!"" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the officers as they pushed her toward the elevator. ""Hannah will never take you back! You broke her! You destroyed your own family, and now you’re destroying this company with your pathetic guilt!""
""The company will survive,"" Ethan said quietly as the elevator doors began to slide shut. ""My soul probably won't. But you will spend the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary thinking about the difference.""
