Chapter 9 - The Confession

The steel door clicked open. Caitlyn stood in the frame, her clothes covered in dust, her eyes red from the smoke. When she saw Deari standing there—alive, victorious, though covered in sweat and gunsmoke—she forgot every corporate rule, every boundary, and every ounce of restraint.
She threw herself into his arms.
Deari caught her, groaning slightly as her weight pressed against his wounded arm, but he didn't care. He wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off the floor, burying his face in the crook of her neck. Caitlyn gripped his shoulders, sobbing uncontrollably against his chest, her hands checking his neck, his arms, his chest, making sure he was whole.
""You're alive... oh God, you're alive,"" she cried.
""I’m alive, Caitlyn,"" Deari murmured, his hands gently stroking her hair. ""I’m right here.""
Across the warehouse floor, Julian Moretti was dragging his shattered leg toward a wooden crate, leaving a smear of red behind him. ""Hamilton..."" Julian wheezed, his face white with shock. ""My uncle... Vincent will wipe out your entire bloodline for this...""
Deari released Caitlyn gently, stepping toward the wounded mobster. He pulled Julian’s discarded phone from the floor, unlocked it using the trembling man’s bloody fingerprint, and dialed Vincent Moretti’s direct line. He put the call on speaker.
""Julian?"" Vincent’s voice answered instantly, tense with anticipation. ""Is it done? Is Hamilton dead?""
""Vincent,"" Deari spoke into the mic, his tone smooth, polite, and lethal.
A suffocating pause fell over the line. Vincent’s breath hitched. ""Hamilton.""
""Your nephew’s ambush failed,"" Deari said calmly. ""Luigi is dead. Julian’s mercenaries are dead. Julian is currently bleeding onto my warehouse floor. By morning, my crews will seize every dock, every warehouse, and every shipping route your family owns between Boston and Atlantic City. If you or any member of your organization remains in New York past sunrise, I will deliver your nephew’s head to your front doorstep in a cardboard box.""
""Hamilton, wait—we can negotiate—"" Vincent pleaded, the arrogance completely stripped from his voice.
Deari ended the call and tossed the phone onto Julian’s lap. He turned toward the door as three fresh black SUVs—carrying Deari’s loyal secondary enforcers—slid into the warehouse, tires screeching.
""Clean this up,"" Deari ordered his men, gesturing toward Julian and the bodies. ""Call the medical team to the penthouse. We're leaving.""
An hour later, inside the luxurious quiet of Deari’s master suite in Manhattan, Caitlyn sat on the edge of the king-sized bed. A syndicate doctor had already cleaned and stitched the graze on Deari’s arm, leaving a neat line of black sutures before quietly exiting the penthouse.
Deari sat on the bed beside her, his dress shirt discarded, a clean white bandage wrapped around his bicep. The city lights outside glittered through the panoramic windows, peaceful and distant.
Caitlyn held a damp cloth, gently wiping away the remaining smudges of soot and dried blood from his jawline. Her fingers were infinitely gentle, her touch lingering against his stubbled cheek.
""You could have died tonight,"" she whispered, her hazel eyes glistening with fresh emotion. ""You jumped in front of those bullets for me.""
Deari reached up, wrapping his large, warm hand around her wrist, stopping her movement. He looked into her eyes with a raw vulnerability that no living person had ever been permitted to see.
""Two years ago, Caitlyn, when you walked into my office for that interview, you were terrified of me,"" Deari said softly. ""Everyone in this city looks at me and sees a monster, a mobster, an executioner. But you... you saw a man carrying an empire on his back. You stayed up for forty-six hours because you cared about your brother. You fell asleep on my shoulder on that plane because you trusted me.""
He leaned closer, his dark eyes searching hers.
""I have spent my whole life surrounded by killers and traitors who only love my money. You are the only real, good thing that has ever stepped into my world. I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you.""
Caitlyn’s breath caught in her throat. The barriers that had stood between them for two long years collapsed into dust.
May you like
""I don't see a monster, Deari,"" she whispered, using his first name for the very first time. ""I never did.""
Deari pulled her gently forward, and this time, there were no orders, no contracts, and no secrets. When his lips met hers, the kiss was deep, fierce, and filled with a desperate, tender hunger that wiped away every memory of blood, fear, and darkness.
