Chapter 8 - Blood and Iron

""Flank them from the left!"" Julian’s voice shrieked through the smoke. ""He’s behind the crane parts! Flush him out!""
Heavy gunfire sprayed against the steel crate concealing them, the impacts ringing like church bells of doom. Caitlyn covered her ears, curling into a tight ball against the concrete floor. She had never been so close to violent death, but watching Deari operate was like witnessing a force of nature.
He didn't panic. He calculated.
Deari checked the reflection in the polished chrome of an industrial wheel resting beside him. Two shooters were advancing along the north aisle, while Luigi and Julian were holding the main corridor near the exit.
""Caitlyn,"" Deari whispered, pulling a tactical smoke grenade from his tactical belt. ""When I pop this pin, close your eyes and cover your mouth. When the smoke fills the aisle, crawl toward the small office cubicle along the eastern wall. Lock the steel door from the inside.""
""I’m not leaving you!"" she gasped, grabbing his forearm.
""You're not leaving me, you're getting out of my line of fire,"" Deari countered, leaning in and pressing a fierce, breathless kiss against her forehead. ""Trust me. I haven't lost a war in ten years, and I’m not starting tonight.""
He pulled the pin with his teeth and hurled the canister into the center aisle.
A deafening hiss tore through the air as dense, blinding white phosphorus smoke billowed across the warehouse, swallowing the floodlights in an impenetrable cloud. Blind gunfire erupted immediately as the mercenaries panicked, shooting wildly into the fog.
""Now! Go!"" Deari commanded.
Caitlyn scrambled on her hands and knees through the white haze, the acrid smoke burning her throat. Behind her, the warehouse transformed into a slaughterhouse.
Deari emerged from the smoke like a phantom. Moving with brutal, terrifying efficiency, he closed the distance on the two advancing shooters. A knife flicked from his boot—one strike severed an artery, a point-blank gunshot neutralized the second. He snatched an dropped assault rifle from the floor, spinning around to face the main doors.
Luigi was backing toward the exit in absolute terror, realizing the ambush had completely collapsed. ""Julian! He’s behind us! Shoot him!""
Julian turned to run, but Deari’s bullet caught him cleanly through the right kneecap. Julian collapsed to the floor with a bloodcurdling scream, dropping his shotgun and clutching his shattered leg.
Luigi reached the heavy metal sliding door, desperately fumbling with the latch.
Before he could slide it open, a massive hand grabbed him by the collar of his coat, violently slamming his face into the corrugated steel wall. Luigi rebounded, his nose broken, blood streaming into his mouth. He looked up into the face of Deari Hamilton.
Deari’s charcoal eyes were completely hollow—the face of the dock butcher that had terrorized the underworld for a decade.
""Boss... please,"" Luigi choked out, raising his trembling hands. ""It was the Morettis... they threatened my family... they forced me—""
""You stood by my side for ten years, Luigi,"" Deari said softly, pressing the warm barrel of his Glock against Luigi’s forehead. ""You knew the rules. You betray the family, you die. But you aimed a weapon at the woman under my protection.""
Deari’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper.
""For that, there is no forgiveness.""
Bang.
Luigi’s body slumped lifelessly against the warehouse door, sliding down onto the bloody concrete.
Silence descended over Warehouse 14, broken only by the distant lapping of the Hudson River and Julian Moretti’s pathetic whimpering from the center floor.

Deari lowered his weapon. He turned and walked toward the small office cubicle where Caitlyn was hiding. He tapped twice on the reinforced glass.
""Caitlyn,"" he called out, his voice instantly shedding its homicidal edge, returning to that familiar, deep baritone. ""It’s over. Open the door.""
