Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Tommy

The small, run-down apartment Caitlyn rented in Queens felt even smaller after spending days in private jets and penthouse suites. At 6:00 AM, while the city below groaned to life, Caitlyn stood in her tiny kitchen, waiting for the electric kettle to boil. Her body still throbbed with fatigue, but sleep was a luxury she couldn't afford.

Her phone chimed on the laminate counter. The caller ID displayed the name she dreaded and prayed for in equal measure: St. Jude Neurological Care Facility.

She answered instantly. ""Hello? Dr. Vance?""

""Caitlyn, good morning. I'm sorry to call so early,"" the doctor’s weary voice came through the speaker.

""Is Tommy okay? Did something happen?"" Caitlyn pressed the phone against her ear, her fingernails biting into her palm.

""He had another focal seizure last night,"" Dr. Vance said gently. ""We stabilized him quickly, but the swelling around his temporal lobe is creating new complications. The experimental peptide therapy we discussed is no longer optional, Caitlyn. If we don't start the treatment cycle next week, his cognitive decline will become permanent.""

Caitlyn closed her eyes, swallowing the bile rising in her throat. ""How much?""

""The insurance has formally denied the claim, citing experimental protocols. The full six-month protocol, including round-the-clock monitoring, requires an upfront deposit of seventy-five thousand dollars.""

Seventy-five thousand. The number hung in the cold kitchen air like a noose. Her entire savings account held barely twelve thousand. Even with her generous salary from Hamilton Enterprises, she had poured every single cent into Tommy's monthly boarding and physical therapy.

""I'll get it,"" Caitlyn said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound resolute. ""Please, Dr. Vance. Don't transfer him to state care. I will wire the deposit by the end of the week.""

""You have until Friday, Caitlyn. After that, the board will force me to release his bed.""

She hung up, sinking onto the worn wooden chair, burying her face in her trembling hands. Seventy-five thousand dollars in four days. It was an impossible sum for an ordinary person. But she didn't work for an ordinary person. She worked for a man who moved ten million dollars across offshore accounts with a single flick of his pen.

Yet asking Deari Hamilton for a loan was a dangerous game. In Deari’s world, every favor came with a price tag, and debts were paid in blood or servitude.

At precisely noon, a loud knock sounded at her door. Caitlyn opened it to reveal a tall courier carrying a massive, velvet-lined garment bag and a sleek black box bearing the logo of an ultra-luxury Fifth Avenue boutique.

""Delivery for Miss Caitlyn Elmore from Mr. Hamilton,"" the man announced, handing over the packages before turning on his heel without waiting for a tip.

Caitlyn carried the items into her bedroom and unzipped the garment bag. She caught her breath. Inside hung an emerald-green silk gown, cut with breathtaking elegance—high-necked, sleeveless, with an open back that dipped into a tasteful, dramatic curve. In the black box lay a pair of designer satin heels and a velvet pouch containing genuine diamond drop earrings.

He hadn't just sent an outfit; he had sent a disguise. A costume designed to transform a broke, exhausted girl from Queens into the polished consort of an underworld king.

When the black Escalade arrived outside her apartment building at 7:00 PM, Caitlyn stepped onto the pavement. She had swept her chestnut hair into a sleek chignon, letting a few soft tendrils frame her face. The emerald dress hugged her slender frame perfectly, its deep color making her fair skin glow under the streetlamps.

The rear door opened. Deari Hamilton stepped out to greet her.

He was dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt and a silk bow tie, looking every inch the aristocratic predator. For a fraction of a second, as his eyes swept over her from head to toe, the mask of cold authority slipped from his face, replaced by raw, primal appreciation.

""You clean up remarkably well, Miss Elmore,"" Deari said, his voice low and raspy.

""Thank you, Mr. Hamilton,"" she murmured, clutching her small evening clutch. ""The dress is far too extravagant.""

May you like

""The dress is business expense,"" he countered smoothly, offering his arm. ""Tonight, you are not my assistant. Tonight, you are my equal at that table. Keep your head high, smile when I speak, and don't let anyone intimidate you.""

She placed her gloved hand on the crook of his forearm, feeling the iron strength beneath the fabric. As the car sped toward the glittering lights of the St. Regis, Caitlyn made a silent vow: she would survive tonight, she would protect Deari's secrets, and somehow, before Friday arrived, she would find a way to save her brother.
