Chapter 1 - The Midnight Command

""Step back, Luigi,"" Deari commanded, his tone low, quiet, and razor-sharp enough to cut glass.

Luigi Cavalier froze in mid-stride, his fingers still curled against the butt of the pistol under his coat. In the rear lounge of the Gulfstream G650, the atmosphere had plunged below freezing. Across the cabin, two hardened captains and an armed bodyguard stood motionless, their breath trapped in their chests. None of them had ever witnessed a living soul breach Deari Hamilton’s personal perimeter without paying in blood. The underworld kingpin had shattered bones for lesser slights, yet here sat Caitlyn Elmore—pale, frail, and completely unconscious—her temple resting against the charcoal Italian wool of his shoulder.

Deari did not shove her away. He did not flinch. Instead, he kept his posture perfectly steady, absorbing the slight weight of her head so she wouldn't jolt awake. With his free hand, he caught her slipping digital tablet before it clattered onto the hardwood floor, laying it silently on the low marble drink ledge beside his glass of scotch.

""Boss,"" Luigi rasped, trying to recover his footing. ""She’s out of line. I can wake her up and throw her in the rear jump seat—""

""I said step back,"" Deari repeated, his eyes cutting toward his lieutenant with lethal precision. ""Did I stutter, Luigi?""

Luigi swallowed hard, lowering his chin, and retreated two paces. The message was unmistakable. Deari Hamilton was not a man given to mercy, but he was a man who understood numbers, discipline, and endurance. For forty-six continuous hours, this woman had followed him through high-stakes negotiations, hostile takeovers, and cross-country flights without uttering a single complaint. She had absorbed the toxic tension of the Chicago docks, recorded every illicit manifest, and stood unflinching in boardrooms while men twice her size shook with fear. She hadn’t collapsed out of disrespect. Her body had simply given out.

Deari reached behind him, pulling free a soft cashmere throw folded over the back of the cream leather lounger. Moving with an unexpected, deliberate gentleness, he unfolded the blanket with one arm and draped it over Caitlyn’s trembling frame, tucking it securely around her shoulders. She exhaled a long, shuddering sigh in her sleep, nuzzling deeper into the crook of his collarbone, entirely unaware that she was resting against the most lethal syndicate leader on the Eastern seaboard.

Deari turned his gaze back to his men. ""Lower your voices. The Moretti situation waits until we touch down at Teterboro. If anyone speaks above a whisper while this plane is in the air, I’ll personally throw them out of the emergency hatch at thirty thousand feet. Am I clear?""

""Crystal, boss,"" Luigi whispered, exchanging an alarmed look with the captains.

For the next two and a half hours, the private jet flew through the night storm in total, eerie silence. Men who had spent decades ordering assassinations and running racketeering rings walked on their tiptoes. Deari remained completely still, ignoring the dull cramp in his left shoulder rather than shifting and disturbing the exhausted girl. He looked down at the dark shadows bruised under her closed eyelids, noting how light she was, how defenseless. He knew her personnel file by heart: Caitlyn Elmore, twenty-five, zero criminal history, spotless administrative record, sole guardian of a catastrophically injured brother.

She had worked herself half to death to keep a hospital bill paid, working in the belly of a beast she barely understood.

When the jet’s landing gear finally deployed with a heavy thud, vibrating through the cabin floor, Caitlyn stirred. Her eyelids fluttered open, blinking against the dim cabin lights. For three seconds, she was disoriented, basking in a warm, unfamiliar scent of cedarwood, rich wool, and expensive tobacco.

Then reality slammed into her chest like a sledgehammer.

Her cheek was pressed against an iron chest. Her hand was resting against Deari Hamilton’s lapel. And his dark, penetrating eyes were staring straight down into hers.
