Chapter 5 - The Desperate Deal

By 2:00 AM, the gala had ended, and the city streets were glistening black beneath a clearing sky. Inside Deari’s high-rise penthouse office overlooking Central Park, the lights were dimmed to a soft amber glow. Deari had discarded his tuxedo jacket and loosened his bowtie, pouring two fingers of bourbon into a crystal tumbler at his private bar.
Caitlyn stood near the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, still wearing the emerald gown, her reflection ghosting against the glittering skyline. The adrenaline of the evening had completely faded, leaving behind the crushing, suffocating reality of her life.
Friday was three days away. Tommy was slipping.
She turned around, her hands trembling as she clutched her evening bag. Deari watched her over the rim of his glass, his sharp instincts picking up on her distress instantly.
""Speak, Caitlyn,"" he said, taking a slow sip. ""You've been hovering on the edge of tears since we left the hotel.""
Caitlyn swallowed the lump in her throat. She had spent two years maintaining rigid professional boundaries, never bringing her personal tragedy into this den of wolves. But pride was useless when a life was on the line.
""I need your help, Mr. Hamilton,"" she whispered, her voice cracking.
Deari set his glass down on the polished mahogany bar. He didn't mock her. He didn't scoff. He simply leaned against the counter, folding his arms. ""Tell me.""
""My brother, Tommy,"" she began, the tears finally breaking past her lashes, hot and silent against her cheeks. ""He was in an accident three years ago. Severe traumatic brain injury. He’s at a residential facility in Pennsylvania. His doctors found an experimental therapy that can stop his cognitive deterioration, but the insurance company denied coverage. I need seventy-five thousand dollars by Friday morning. If I can't pay, they’re going to discharge him to a state facility... and he won't survive there. He can't even feed himself.""
She dropped her head, her shoulders shaking. ""Deduct it from my salary. Double my hours. Make me sign a lifetime contract, I don't care. I will do whatever you ask of me, Mr. Hamilton. Anything. Just... please don't let my brother die.""
The room fell into profound silence. The only sound was her soft, muffled weeping.
Deari crossed the expansive office with slow, measured steps, stopping inches from where she stood. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers cupping her chin and gently lifting her face until her tear-filled hazel eyes met his dark gaze.
""Look at me, Caitlyn,"" he ordered softly.
She looked up, trembling under the intensity of his stare.
""Do you honestly think,"" Deari murmured, his thumb wiping away a tear from her cheek, ""that after watching you work yourself to exhaustion for my empire, I would let your brother rot in a state hospital over seventy-five thousand dollars?""
Caitlyn blinked, stunned. ""Sir?""
""Luigi,"" Deari called out without breaking eye contact with her.
The heavy office doors clicked open immediately. Luigi stepped inside, holding a secure tablet. ""Yeah, boss?""
""Contact Dr. Vance at the St. Jude facility,"" Deari instructed, his voice ringing with absolute authority. ""Wire five hundred thousand dollars directly to their operational account tonight. Establish an open medical trust in Caitlyn Elmore’s name. Tommy receives top-tier private care, private specialists, and round-the-clock security at his wing starting right now.""
Luigi's eyes widened. ""Boss? Five hundred grand? For the secretary's brother?""
Deari turned his head just enough to catch Luigi in his peripheral vision. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. ""Did you lose your hearing in Chicago, Luigi? Or do you need me to reassign your duties permanently?""
Luigi swallowed hard, typing furiously on the tablet. ""Wiring it now, Mr. Hamilton. It'll clear in ten minutes.""
""Now get out.""
Luigi bowed his head and backed out of the office, closing the heavy doors behind him.
Caitlyn stood completely immobilized, her breath hitching in her chest. Five hundred thousand dollars. An open trust. Top-tier private specialists. A lifetime of torment, panic, and sleepless terror had just been dissolved with three sentences from a mafia kingpin.
""I... I can't repay that,"" she gasped, her knees buckling beneath her. ""Mr. Hamilton, that’s half a million dollars. I can't ever—""
Deari caught her by the waist before she could fall, pulling her flush against his chest. His arms wrapped around her slender frame, solid, protective, and unyielding.
May you like
""You don't owe me a dime, Caitlyn,"" Deari whispered against her hair, his hand pressing gently against the small of her back. ""You stood by my side in rooms where grown men wet themselves in terror. You defended my honor against the Morettis tonight. Your brother is safe. You never have to worry about his care again.""
Caitlyn buried her face into his shoulder—the same broad, warm shoulder she had collapsed onto in the airplane—and wept openly, letting go of three agonizing years of solitary fear. Deari didn't pull away. He simply held her against his heart as the Manhattan rain beat softly against the glass.
