Chapter 7 - The Gutter Of Humiliation

Weeks bled into months, each day dragging me further into the mud of my own making.

I couldn't get a job at a single architectural firm in Illinois, Wisconsin, or Indiana; the moment my name was entered into human resource databases, my application was immediately flagged and discarded.

I sold my luxury sedan to pay for back taxes and rented a cramped, windowless basement apartment in a decaying brick walk-up near the industrial rail yards.

I took a job as an overnight shift supervisor at a commercial lumber yard, stacking heavy two-by-fours until my palms were raw with splinters and my back screamed in agony every morning.

The men I worked with had no idea who I was.

They didn't care about luxury penthouses, lakefront views, or eight-figure tech acquisitions; they only cared about whether the trucks were loaded before dawn.

One rainy evening, while wiping down grease from a forklift in the warehouse, I noticed a discarded business magazine lying on the breakroom table.

On the glossy cover was Claire.

She was standing on a balcony overlooking the Alps in Geneva, wearing an elegant cream trench coat, her hair shining under the crisp morning light, looking ten years younger than the tired, quiet woman who had stood beside me in the Daley Center.

The headline read: The Billion-Dollar Architect Of Empathy: How Claire Vance Rebuilt Her Life And Revolutionized Global Spatial Tech.

Inside the article was a single interview question about her past marriage.

“Do you harbor anger toward your former husband?” the journalist had asked.

Claire’s printed response was short, clear, and devastatingly honest:

May you like

“I don't harbor anger toward people who don't exist. The man I married was a fiction I spent twelve years trying to keep alive. When the curtain fell, there was nobody left on stage to hate.”

I dropped the magazine into the recycling bin, slumped against the corrugated steel wall, and wept until my chest felt like it was tearing apart.
