Chapter 6 - The Fall From Grace

By Friday morning, my world had completely vanished.
The video recording and the financial receipts Claire had released had gone viral across every major social media platform, garnering over twelve million views and sparking a national discussion about financial abuse and covert narcissism in marriages.
Every prospective client who had booked meetings with me canceled their contracts within forty-eight hours.
My banking app showed a frozen balance; the IRS had placed an immediate administrative hold on my personal accounts following Claire’s forensic accountant submitting five years of fraudulent joint deductions I had filed without her knowledge.
I rented a filthy, single-room motel on the outskirts of Cicero, listening to the roar of highway traffic through cracked, yellowed blinds.
My phone rang once.
I lunged for it, hoping against hope that it was Tessa, or my mother, or perhaps an old college friend offering a couch to sleep on.
It was my sister, Megan.
"Megan," I choked out, breaking into tears for the first time in five days. "Megan, please, I don't have anywhere to go. The banks froze my cards."
"Don't call me Megan," she said, her voice dripping with disgust. "Mom had an anxiety attack yesterday after reading the text messages you sent to Claire while she was sitting in the chemotherapy waiting room with Aunt Sarah last year."
"I didn't know Aunt Sarah was sick!" I protested frantically.
"Because you never asked, Daniel!" Megan shouted through the line. "You never asked about anyone other than yourself! You spent twelve years taking credit for a woman who carried your entire existence on her back, and then you threw her away like garbage when you thought you found someone shinier."
"Please, Meg... just lend me five hundred dollars for a hotel room," I begged, pressing the phone against my trembling forehead.

"Go ask Tessa for the money," Megan replied coldly. "Oh, wait. She released a video yesterday claiming you groomed and manipulated her into believing your wife was abusive. You are on your own, Daniel. Don't ever contact our family again."
The line went dead, the dial tone buzzing in my ear like a funeral dirn.
