Chapter 1 - The Ash In The Champagne

The cold glass of Dom Pérignon trembled against my sweating fingertips as my mother’s text message glared from the bright screen.
“I raised a monster,” her message began, the words cutting deeper than any butcher’s knife. “Your father and I gave you everything, Daniel, yet you sat in front of our family and called that poor girl barren, lazy, and broken while you secretly drained her soul. Never set foot in our home again until you beg for her forgiveness on your bare knees.”
Tessa reached across the white linen tablecloth, her manicured fingers grazing my wrist.
"Daniel, you're white as a sheet," she whispered, her brow furrowing in genuine irritation. "What is your mother talking about? Why is everyone blowing up your phone like this?"
My fingers shook so violently that I nearly dropped the phone into my half-empty glass.
I exited my mother’s chat and opened the social media application that had lit up with over two thousand notifications in less than ten minutes.
Claire, a woman who had barely posted a single landscape photo in the entire twelve years of our marriage, had shared a public photo album titled: The Twelve-Year Receipt.
The cover image wasn't an angry selfie or a tearful video.
It was a crisp, high-resolution scan of a medical document from Northwestern Memorial Hospital dated four years ago.
It showed the clinical results of our third failed cycle of IVF.
Except my name was stamped beside the diagnosis column in bold red ink: Severe Non-Obstructive Azoospermia — Male Infertility Factor 100%.
Underneath the medical chart was an audio recording dated eighteen months ago.

I tapped the play button with a thumb that felt completely frozen.
Through the phone's small speaker, my own arrogant voice echoed across the quiet restaurant: "My wife can't give me a family, Tessa. She's broken inside, and I'm tired of walking on eggshells around a woman who failed as a partner."
