Chapter 4 - The House On The Lake

The winter wind coming off Lake Michigan was brutal, whipping cold spray against the windows of my luxury German sedan as I sped toward our Lakeview brownstone.
I still had my keys.
I still had the deed that bore our names.
I convinced myself that this was all just a temporary media thunderstorm, a clever public relations stunt Claire had orchestrated to win a petty psychological victory before moving on.
I pulled into the cobblestone driveway and slammed the car door shut, sprinting up the limestone steps through the falling snow.
I shoved my brass key into the front door lock and turned it with all my strength.
It didn't budge.
The cylinder was stiff, newly oiled, and completely dead.
A neat, printed notice was taped to the glass beside the deadbolt, bearing the seal of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and a private asset management firm.
Notice of Exclusive Occupancy and Asset Liquidation: This property has been placed under the sole trusteeship of the Vance-Holloway Estate pursuant to Clause 14 of the Premarital Property Agreement dated October 12, 2014.
The wooden door swung open before I could raise my fist to pound on the frosted glass.
Standing inside was not Claire.
It was her brother, Liam, a former marine logistics officer who stood six-foot-three with shoulders like a concrete wall. He wore a heavy wool sweater and held a steaming mug of black coffee, looking at me with the kind of casual pity you’d give a stray rat in an alleyway.
"Liam," I gasped, shivering in the freezing wind. "Liam, where is Claire? This is my house! My name is on the mortgage!"
May you like
Liam took a slow sip of his coffee, not blinking once.
"The mortgage you paid using her trust fund distributions, Daniel?" Liam asked softly, his voice cutting through the whistling wind. "The house was purchased entirely with grandfather's inheritance. Claire gave you ten years to put a single cent of your own earnings into the principal, and you spent it all on hotel suites in Miami."
