Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Eviction

Tessa didn't wait for the valet.
She threw her cloth napkin onto the ruined table, unclasped the sapphire necklace, and dropped it into the puddle of champagne before storming out into the chilly Chicago afternoon.
I sat alone among the wreckage, my phone buzzing like an angry hornet in my palm.
It was Arthur Sterling, the senior founding partner of Sterling & Holloway Architecture, my primary business mentor and the firm's majority stakeholder.
I pressed the device against my ear, my breath ragged and uneven. "Arthur, please, let me explain—"
"There is nothing to explain, Daniel," Arthur’s voice dropped like an icy hammer. "Turn on CNBC or open the Chicago Business Tribune right now."
I tapped into my mobile browser with frantic, slick fingers.
The headline was already trending at number one: Tech Giant Vanguard Acquires Holloway Spatial Design for $85 Million; Co-Founder Claire Vance Steps Into Group Executive Chair.
My jaw dropped, my heart hammering against my ribs until it felt like they would crack.
"Claire was the primary creative director behind the automated CAD patents our firm has been licensing for five years," Arthur continued, his tone devoid of any mercy. "We thought she was just your quiet, supportive spouse. She owned eighty percent of the foundational source code, Daniel."
"What does that mean for our partnership?" I whispered, my voice trembling with pathetic desperation.
"It means our contract with Holloway Spatial was severed the exact second that divorce decree was stamped at noon," Arthur stated flatly. "You signed a non-compete clause five years ago that assigned all creative licenses back to her personal trust if your marriage dissolved for cause."

"No... no, the judge ruled it no-fault!" I shouted into the phone, standing up in the middle of the restaurant.
"Read your divorce decree rider, idiot," Arthur snarled. "Claire's attorney inserted an intellectual property carve-out that your twenty-something lawyer didn't even bother to read. Sterling & Architecture is terminating your equity partnership effective immediately. Security is boxing your personal effects right now. Do not come to the office."
