Chapter 9 - The Proposal at Sundown

Six months passed, bringing with them the warm, fragrant breezes of late spring. The dark clouds that had hung over the Moretti estate for years had completely dissipated, replaced by an atmosphere of warmth, laughter, and genuine family.

Clare had long ceased working as a maid. Under Lorenzo's gentle insistence, she had begun taking classes in interior design, pursuing the dreams she had put on hold when Ethan died. But more than that, she had become the heart and soul of Lorenzo's life.

They shared quiet morning coffees on the grand terrace, spent evenings reading bedtime stories to Lily together, and discovered a profound, unspoken love that grew deeper with every passing sunrise. Lorenzo had legally adopted Lily, bestowing upon her the Moretti name and officially declaring her his sole heir.

Yet, Lorenzo knew there was one final piece missing to complete their healing.

On a warm Saturday evening in May, Lorenzo took Clare and Lily to the private botanical gardens at the rear of the estate. The wisteria vines were in full purple bloom, hanging over stone arches like fairytale curtains. The setting sun painted the Philadelphia skyline in breathtaking shades of violet, amber, and rose.

Lily was busy chasing fireflies near the koi pond, her joyous giggles echoing through the warm air.

Clare leaned against the stone balustrade, looking out over the gardens, her sundress fluttering in the evening breeze. She felt a pair of strong, familiar arms wrap around her waist from behind, pulling her back against Lorenzo’s broad, warm chest.

"What are you thinking about?" Clare asked, leaning her head back against his shoulder.

"I’m thinking about the day a little girl walked into my study with a gray blanket," Lorenzo whispered softly, his lips brushing against her temple. "I was a dead man walking, Clare. I had buried my heart with Elena. I thought my only purpose in this world was to command violence and manage grief."

He gently turned her around so she was facing him. His dark eyes, once cold and terrifying, were brimming with deep, tender reverence.

"You and Lily brought me back to life," Lorenzo said, his voice trembling slightly. "You saved my niece, you raised her with pure love, and you gave me a reason to be a better man. I don't just want to be Lily’s father, Clare. I want to be your husband."

Clare’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes filled with tears of pure, overwhelming joy.

Lorenzo dropped to one knee before her on the stone terrace. From his pocket, he pulled a small velvet box and opened it. Inside rested a breathtaking platinum ring, featuring a brilliant emerald-cut diamond flanked by two small rubies shaped like star petals.

"Clare Bennett," Lorenzo said, looking up at her with his heart in his eyes. "Will you marry me, and make this house a true home forever?"

"Yes!" Clare sobbed happily, dropping to her knees with him and wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply under the setting sun. "Yes, Lorenzo, a thousand times yes!"

From across the lawn, Lily came sprinting over, holding an empty plastic cup. "Mommy! Daddy! Did we catch a firefly?"

Lorenzo laughed—a rich, booming laugh of pure, untainted happiness—and scooped both Clare and Lily into his massive embrace, holding his entire world tightly against his chest.
