Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Locket

The autumn days bled into a chilly November, painting the Chestnut Hill oaks in shades of rusted copper and gold. Lily's presence had become an indispensable rhythm of the Moretti household. Even Mrs. Holloway, the stern matriarch of domestic staff, had begun leaving freshly baked cinnamon cookies shaped like stars outside the study door.
One rainy Friday afternoon, Lily was sitting cross-legged on the thick carpet, humming an improvised tune while carefully drawing an intricate family of ladybugs. Her red wool cardigan had slipped slightly off one shoulder, exposing the neckline of her white cotton undershirt.
Lorenzo was on the phone, speaking in clipped, harsh Italian regarding a hijacked container shipment at the docks, when Lily let out a small gasp of frustration.
"Mr. Lorenzo! The button came off my pocket!"
Lorenzo held up a finger to the phone, paused his sentence, and glanced down. "One moment," he muttered into the receiver, pulling the phone away from his ear.
Lily stood up and trotted over to his leather armchair, holding out her little cardigan. As she did, the collar of her undershirt pulled downward, revealing her left collarbone and the top of her shoulder.
Lorenzo’s breath caught in his throat.
There, stamped against Lily's pale, delicate skin just below the clavicle, was an unmistakable, uniquely shaped birthmark: a tiny, deep-crimson cluster of pigmentation that resembled the silhouette of a five-pointed star with a slight curve at the trailing edge.
The phone slipped from Lorenzo’s grasp, hitting the mahogany floorboards with a dull thud.
*No. It's impossible,* his mind screamed, his vision swimming in sudden vertigo.
Elena had carried that exact mark. It was an exceedingly rare genetic anomaly passed down through three generations of Moretti women. Elena had possessed it on her left shoulder blade. And during her pregnancy, Elena had laughed during an ultrasound, rubbing her swollen belly and telling him, “Lorenzo, if my Lucia inherits our family’s star mark, you’ll have to spoil her twice as much.”
"Mr. Lorenzo? Are you okay?" Lily asked, her large, innocent eyes widening with sudden concern as she saw the color drain completely from his face. "Did the phone hurt your foot?"
Lorenzo fell to his knees before her. His hands, which had taken lives without flinching, trembled violently as he reached out, hovering just an inch above the small crimson mark on her shoulder.
"Lily..." Lorenzo's voice broke, cracked with an anguish so raw it shocked him. "Where... where did you get this mark?"
"I was born with it!" Lily replied proudly, tapping the spot with her tiny finger. "Mommy says it’s my angel kiss. She says an angel touched me before I arrived so she could always find me in the dark."
At that exact moment, the study door swung open. Clare stood in the doorway, carrying a tray of freshly pressed linen. "Lily, honey, it's time to put your coat on, the bus will—"
Clare stopped dead in her tracks.
She saw Lorenzo Moretti, the feared boss of Philadelphia, kneeling on both knees before her daughter, staring at Lily's exposed shoulder with an expression of sheer disbelief and agonized fury.
Lorenzo slowly turned his head toward Clare. His eyes were bloodshot, burning with a terrifying intensity.
"Clare," Lorenzo rasped, his voice vibrating through the quiet room. "Who was Ethan Bennett?"
Clare went completely pale. The laundry tray slipped from her hands, crashing to the floor as sheets spilled across the Persian rug. She backed away against the doorframe, her chest heaving in sudden, blind terror.
"I... he was an electrician, I told you..."
"Don't lie to me!" Lorenzo roared, rising to his feet like an awakening titan. He didn't raise his hand, but his sheer presence filled the entire room with suffocating gravity. "This mark... this is the Moretti bloodline. Only my mother, my sister, and the women of our blood carry this! Elena’s daughter was supposed to have died in that wreck three years ago!"
Clare burst into uncontrollable, agonizing sobs, sinking against the wall and sliding down to the floor, burying her face in her trembling hands.

"Mommy!" Lily cried, terrified by her mother's tears, running past Lorenzo to throw her little arms around Clare's neck. "Mommy, don't cry! Why are you crying?"
Lorenzo stepped toward them, his heart tearing apart inside his ribs. He looked at Clare weeping on the floor, clinging desperately to Lily as if someone were about to rip her soul out of her chest. The mafia boss looked from the weeping woman to the child, and the terrifying truth of three years ago began to unravel before him.
