Chapter 7 - A Father's Vow

Dawn broke over Philadelphia with a pale, golden light that pierced through the autumn mist.
When the black armored SUV pulled into the driveway of the Moretti estate, the courtyard was peaceful. Lorenzo walked through the front doors, shedding his heavy coat and handing his sidearm to Gabriel. He was exhausted, his body aching from the intensity of the night, but his soul felt lighter than it had in a decade.
He took the grand staircase two steps at a time, moving quietly toward the guest suite.
When he opened the door, he found Clare sitting awake on the edge of the bed, her face bathed in the morning sunlight. When she saw him standing there—unharmed, standing tall in the doorway—she let out a ragged breath and covered her mouth, tears of overwhelming relief spilling down her cheeks.
Without a word, Clare ran across the room and threw her arms around his neck.
Lorenzo caught her effortlessly, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist, burying his face in the crook of her neck. He breathed in the scent of lavender and clean linen, holding her against his chest as if she were the only anchor keeping him grounded in this world.
"It's over, Clare," Lorenzo whispered into her hair. "The men who hurt Ethan, the men who hunted you... they will never hurt anyone ever again. You are free."
Clare clung to him, weeping openly against his shoulder, letting go of three years of solitary terror, poverty, and hiding. For the first time since Ethan’s death, she felt truly, completely safe.
A soft rustle from the bed interrupted their embrace.
Lily rubbed her eyes with her small fists, sitting up amidst the mountain of down pillows. She looked at Lorenzo standing in the doorway holding her mother, and a brilliant, sleepy smile illuminated her face.
"Mr. Lorenzo! You came back!" Lily cheered, scrambling out of bed in her bumblebee pajamas.
Lorenzo gently set Clare down and knelt on one knee as Lily sprinted across the room, throwing her little arms around his neck with unreserved love. Lorenzo scooped her up into his powerful arms, holding her tightly against his heart.
He looked at her left shoulder, then at Clare, and finally down into the girl's bright hazel eyes.
"Lily," Lorenzo said, his voice thick with emotion, so gentle it made Clare's breath hitch. "You asked me yesterday if you could call me Daddy."
Lily nodded vigorously, her pigtails bobbing. "Uh-huh! Mr. Bunny said you would be the best daddy in the whole world."
Lorenzo swallowed past the lump in his throat, looking at Clare, who was smiling through her tears with glowing warmth.

"I would be honored to be your daddy, Lily," Lorenzo whispered, kissing her soft cheek. "I will protect you, and I will protect your mommy, for as long as I live. You will never have to be afraid of the dark again."
Lily squealed with pure joy, burying her face into his neck. "Yay! Mommy, did you hear? Mr. Lorenzo is my daddy now!"
