Chapter 5 - Blood and Vengeance

The revelation changed everything within the walls of the Moretti estate.

Lorenzo had not slept for forty-eight hours. While Clare and Lily were safely moved into the lavish master guest suite on the third floor—surrounded by round-the-clock guards personally vetted by Gabriel—Lorenzo turned his vast empire into a relentless war machine.

The puzzle pieces had snapped violently into place. Elena's death had not been a random tragedy; it had been an orchestrated hit ordered by Vincent Marcone to cripple the Moretti family’s spirit. And Ethan Bennett had been murdered in cold blood when Marcone’s men realized an electrician had pulled something alive from the burning wreckage.

In the dimly lit basement war room beneath the estate, Lorenzo stood over a massive satellite map of the Philadelphia riverfront. Gabriel entered, sliding a thick manila folder across the steel table.

"You were right, Boss," Gabriel said, his jaw tight with grim disgust. "The crane operator on Ethan Bennett's job site three years ago received a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars from a shell company registered to Marcone’s cousin. Ethan was eliminated to tie up loose ends."

Lorenzo didn't blink. His expression was carved from glacial obsidian. "Where is Vincent tonight?"

"Celebrating at his private club on the Delaware River," Gabriel replied. "He thinks he has the city cornered. He has no idea we know about the girl."

"He will never touch that child," Lorenzo said, his voice deadly quiet, vibrating with an ancient, primal wrath. "He took my sister. He tried to extinguish her blood. Tonight, the Marcone family ceases to exist in this city."

Lorenzo checked the slide of his custom matte-black Kimber .45, chambering a hollow-point round with a crisp, lethal snap. He wasn't just fighting for territory or respect anymore. He was fighting for his niece, the living legacy of his beloved Elena. And he was fighting for Clare, the selfless woman who had risked everything, enduring poverty and terror, just to keep that innocent light shining.

Before departing, Lorenzo walked upstairs to the guest suite.

He opened the door quietly. The room was bathed in the soft glow of a bedside lamp. Lily was fast asleep in the center of the king-sized bed, hugging Mr. Bunny under her chin. Sitting in an armchair beside her was Clare, her face pale, reading a paperback to keep herself awake.

As Lorenzo stepped inside, Clare stood up immediately. She looked at his dark tactical clothing, the leather holster strapped across his broad chest, and her breath hitched.

"Are you going to war?" she whispered.

"I am going to finish what was started three years ago," Lorenzo said gently, stepping close to her. "You have been looking over your shoulder for thirty-six months, Clare. You have lived in terror of the shadows. Tonight, the shadows burn."

Clare looked into his dark eyes, searching for the ruthless killer the world feared, but all she found was a protector—a fierce guardian who would burn down cities to keep her child safe. Without thinking, she reached out and touched his arm, her fingers wrapping around his bicep.

"Come back to us," Clare murmured, a fierce, raw emotion passing between them. "Lily needs you. I need you."

Lorenzo stared down at her hand, feeling the genuine warmth of her touch seep through his leather jacket straight to his weary heart. For the first time in his life, he felt he had a true home to return to.

He reached up, cupping her cheek with his rough hand, his thumb brushing away an unshed tear. "I will come home, Clare. I swear it on Elena’s grave."
