Chapter 10 - A Fairytale Ending

One year later, the grand courtyard of the Moretti estate was transformed into a breathtaking sea of white roses, twinkling fairy lights, and classical strings.
It was the society wedding of the decade, but there were no cold business arrangements here. The guests included close friends, household staff treated as family, and even Don Carmine Falcone, who had flown in from New York to deliver a personalized silver tea set to a very special little girl.
Standing at the altar beneath an archway of blooming white hydrangeas, Lorenzo looked breathtaking in a tailored black tuxedo. Standing beside him as his best man was Gabriel, grinning from ear to ear.
The music shifted into a sweeping, romantic bridal march.
Walking down the rose-petal-strewn aisle came five-year-old Lily, looking like an absolute princess in an ivory flower-girl dress, proudly carrying a silk pillow that held the wedding rings. Beside her walked Mr. Bunny, wearing a miniature black bow tie that Gabriel had hand-sewn for the occasion. Lily beamed with pride, winking at her father as she reached the altar.
And then, Clare appeared.
She took Lorenzo's breath away. Dressed in an off-the-shoulder lace gown that swept the floor with delicate elegance, her honey-blonde hair pinned up with fresh white jasmine, Clare looked radiant. She carried no bouquet of expensive imported orchids, but rather a simple bunch of bright yellow sunflowers—the symbol of hope that had sustained her through her darkest days.
As she reached the altar, Lorenzo took both of her hands in his, looking into her eyes with an adoration so fierce it brought tears to the eyes of even the hardened guards standing watch.
They exchanged their vows—promises of eternal devotion, protection, and unconditional love forged in the fires of survival.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared with a warm smile. "You may kiss your bride."
Lorenzo pulled Clare into his arms, dipping her slightly as he captured her lips in a passionate, tender kiss that sealed their lives together forever, while the entire garden erupted in joyous applause and cheering.
That night, long after the guests had departed and the last violin notes had faded into the warm summer breeze, the estate settled into peaceful silence.
Lorenzo and Clare walked quietly up to the second floor, still hand-in-hand, their wedding bands gleaming softly in the dim corridor lights. They walked past the grand master bedroom and stopped at the walnut door at the end of the hall.
The study door was slightly ajar.
Inside, curled up on the large leather sofa beneath the familiar gray wool blanket, Lily was fast asleep. Beside her on the small wooden table sat her worn fairy-tale book, The King Behind the Sleeping Door, open to the very last page.
Lorenzo and Clare walked in together, stepping lightly across the rug. Lorenzo carefully pulled the blanket up to Lily’s chin, while Clare kissed her soft, sleeping forehead.
On the open page of the book, Lily had scribbled a new line with a red crayon beneath the printed text.
Lorenzo looked down and read the crooked, childish handwriting:

*“And the sleeping king woke up, because the little girl and her mommy loved him forever.”*
Lorenzo pulled his wife close to his side, resting his chin on her hair, while their daughter slept peacefully beneath their watchful gaze. The shadows had vanished, the ghosts had found their peace, and the fortress was finally filled with love.
