Chapter 7 - A Sister In Silk

By eight in the morning, the rain had stopped, giving way to crisp autumn sunlight that illuminated the golden maple trees surrounding the Whitmore estate.

Inside the grand dining room, an elaborate breakfast spread covered the mahogany table: fresh berries, croissants, silver pots of Earl Grey tea, and warm pastries. But Claire sat quietly in a clean, casual sweater and jeans that Alexander’s personal assistant had purchased for her from town, barely touching her food.

Alexander sat at the head of the table, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit. He was reading through three legal briefs while speaking on speakerphone with the family’s head trust attorney, Marcus Vance.

""I don't care what the probate filing deadlines are, Marcus,"" Alexander was saying firmly into the phone. ""We file the codicil in probate court at ten o'clock sharp. I want the paternity affidavit attached, along with the genetic test authorization. Claire has already provided a cheek swab to the private medical lab. The DNA match will be official by two o'clock.""

""Alexander,"" Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker. ""The press will go wild. The Whitmore name will be trending worldwide. Do you realize how many reporters will be parked outside the gates?""

""Let them park,"" Alexander said without hesitation. ""And prepare a formal press statement. State clearly that the Whitmore family proudly welcomes Claire Bennett Whitmore as an equal co-heir to the estate, and that any attempts by third parties to challenge Edward Whitmore’s final wishes will be met with immediate legal retaliation. Have it on the wires by noon.""

Alexander ended the call and set his phone down. He looked across the table at Claire, who was staring at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.

""Why are you doing this so fast?"" Claire asked softly. ""You don't even know me, Alexander. For all you knew yesterday, I was just a thief in the night. Most men in your position would have paid off a judge, offered me a two-million-dollar NDA, and swept me under the rug forever.""

Alexander set his teacup down and leaned forward, his expression dead serious.

""When I was twelve years old,"" Alexander said, his voice tinged with old sorrow, ""my mother caught me crying in the stable because my favorite horse had died. She slapped me across the face and told me that Whitmores do not feel pain, do not show love, and do not apologize. For twenty years, I lived by that rule. I turned myself into a machine to keep this empire running.""

He paused, looking out the large bay windows at the manicured lawns. ""My father died surrounded by lawyers and accountants, but not a single person holding his hand who actually cared about his soul. When I saw you sitting on the floor of his study last night, crying over a picture of a baby by a lake... I realized that you were the only real thing my father ever created. If I turn my back on you now, I am no better than the monsters who raised me.""

Claire felt a warm lump rise in her throat. For her entire life, she had believed the Whitmores were cold, heartless gods who viewed the rest of humanity as ants to be crushed. Yet sitting across from her was a brother who would dismantle his own empire just to give her justice.

The dining room doors creaked open slowly.

Victoria stepped into the room. She was wearing no makeup, her hair was pulled back in a simple bun, and her eyes were red and swollen from hours of crying. Gone was the imperious, icy heiress who ruled Manhattan charity galas; in her place was a broken woman stripped of all her illusions.

Alexander stood up immediately, his posture stiffening. ""Victoria. I thought I told you to remain in your room.""

May you like

""I... I just wanted to speak to Claire,"" Victoria whispered, her voice cracking. ""Please, Alexander. Just two minutes.""

Alexander looked at Claire, waiting for her signal. Claire nodded gently. ""It's alright, Alexander. Let her speak.""
