Chapter 5 - The Gates Of Jericho

Claire gasped, rising to her feet in panic. ""They're going to arrest me! Victoria told Arthur Sterling I stole trade secrets!""
""Calm down,"" Alexander commanded, his voice dropping into icy focus. He opened the study safe behind the oil painting, pulled out a flash drive, and plugged it into his computer. Within thirty seconds, he made digital backups of the codicil, the Lake George photograph, and Victoria's threatening telegram. He slipped the flash drive into his pocket, took the original papers, and placed them into his leather portfolio.
""Listen to me carefully, Claire,"" Alexander said, looking directly into her eyes. ""You are under my protection. Arthur Sterling and Victoria think they run this town, but they forget that Whitmore Global owns the ground they walk on. Follow me.""
Alexander led Claire out of the study and down the grand spiral staircase. In the central foyer, the heavy oak front doors swung open.
Arthur Sterling stroded inside, accompanied by two uniformed police officers and a high-priced corporate lawyer in a cashmere overcoat. Sterling was a sharp-featured man in his late fifties, with slicked-back gray hair and eyes as cold as silver coins. Behind them, Victoria came down the east wing stairs, a triumphant sneer plastered across her face.
""Alexander!"" Victoria called out dramatically. ""Thank God Arthur got here in time! That woman is dangerous! She broke into father's private files to sell proprietary merger data to our European competitors! Arrest her immediately, officers!""
The two police officers stepped forward, unholstering their handcuffs. ""Ms. Claire Bennett? Step forward with your hands behind your back.""
""Take one more step toward her,"" Alexander announced, his voice echoing through the vaulted marble foyer, ""and I will have both of your badges stripped by sunrise.""
The officers stopped, glancing uncomfortably at each other. Everyone in the county knew Alexander Whitmore's influence; he funded the entire regional police pension board.
""Alexander, don't be a fool,"" Arthur Sterling spoke, stepping forward with an arrogant smile. ""This girl is a nobody. A domestic worker with a criminal record of trespassing. Victoria called me in tears. We have an injunction signed by Judge Vance granting us temporary custody of all sensitive materials on this estate pending the merger.""
""Judge Vance is on your golf club committee, Arthur,"" Alexander replied with utter disdain. ""And your injunction is completely worthless here. Because this is not an industrial espionage case. This is a family matter.""
""Family?"" Arthur laughed mockingly. ""What family? That pathetic girl in the maid costume?""
""Her name is Claire Bennett Whitmore,"" Alexander said clearly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. ""She is the legitimate biological daughter of Edward Whitmore. And under the terms of our father’s final will and testament, she is the primary beneficiary of the Whitmore Family Heritage Trust.""
The foyer went deathly silent.
Arthur Sterling’s smug smile vanished instantly. Victoria turned white as chalk.
""That's a lie!"" Victoria screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Claire. ""She has no proof! Father was out of his mind when he wrote those notes! He was senile! He was medically incompetent!""
""Was he?"" Alexander stepped down the last three marble steps and stopped two feet from Arthur Sterling. He held up the leather portfolio. ""The codicil was signed six months before his death, witnessed by retired Federal Judge Robert Harrison, and certified by independent psychiatric evaluators in Boston. Father knew exactly what kind of snakes he was dealing with.""
Alexander turned to the police officers. ""Officers, you were brought here under false pretenses. There are no stolen corporate files. Ms. Bennett is a resident family member inspecting her father’s estate. If you do not leave my private residence right now, my legal team will file wrongful entry and civil rights suits against your department before 8:00 AM.""
The senior officer swallowed hard, tipped his cap toward Alexander, and looked at Sterling. ""Mr. Sterling, this is a civil probate dispute. We have no jurisdiction here. We are clearing out.""
""Wait! You can't leave!"" Victoria shrieked, running down the stairs. ""Arthur, do something! Stop them!""
""Shut up, Victoria!"" Arthur snapped violently, turning on her with sudden venom.
The raw viciousness in Arthur's voice made everyone pause. For the first time, Arthur looked at Victoria not with affection, but with cold, calculating disgust.
""Is this true?"" Arthur hissed at Victoria. ""Does this girl own the non-voting treasury shares?""
Victoria shrank back. ""Arthur... it doesn't matter, we still have the voting control—""
""It matters entirely, you idiot!"" Arthur snarled, revealing his true motives without shame. ""The entire merger agreement with my firm is collateralized against those treasury shares! If those shares belong to Edward's estate and go to an unrecognized heir, the liquidity ratio collapses! My banks will pull the financing by noon!""

Alexander smiled—a cold, ruthless smile that made Arthur Sterling step back.
""Thank you for clarifying that, Arthur,"" Alexander said softly. ""Because as of five minutes ago, I have officially suspended the merger negotiations indefinitely.""
