Chapter 10 - The Cottage By The Lake

Six months later, the early summer breeze swept across the clear blue waters of Lake George.
The old wooden cottage at the edge of the pine forest had been completely restored. The peeling white paint was replaced with fresh cedar siding, the weathered dock was repaired with sturdy oak planks, and vibrant wild hydrangeas bloomed along the stone walkway leading to the water.
On the front porch, three rocking chairs sat looking out toward the mountains.
Alexander walked out onto the wooden dock, holding two cold glasses of lemonade. He wore an untucked linen shirt and rolled-up trousers, looking more relaxed and content than he had in his entire life. He handed one glass to Claire, who was sitting on the edge of the dock, dipping her bare feet into the cool mountain water.
""Victoria just called from London,"" Alexander said, smiling as he sat beside her. ""The European branch of the pediatric foundation just opened its third clinic. She said she’s staying another two weeks to oversee the volunteer training.""
Claire smiled warmly. ""I never thought I'd see Victoria wearing sneakers and handing out toys to sick kids.""
""Redemption changes people,"" Alexander said softly. ""You gave her a second chance when she deserved a jail cell. She won't ever waste it.""
Claire looked across the glittering surface of the lake. In the distance, a pair of loons called out across the water, their hauntingly beautiful song echoing against the pine trees.
""Do you remember coming here?"" Alexander asked.
""Every summer until I was four,"" Claire whispered. ""I used to sit on this exact dock with him. He would put his heavy wool coat over my shoulders when the wind picked up in the evening. I spent twenty-four years thinking I had dreamed it all up. That I was just a crazy girl inventing a father who loved her.""
She reached beneath her collar and pulled out a thin gold chain. Hanging from the chain was the antique brass key that had unlocked the secret compartment in Greenwich.
""He never forgot you, Claire,"" Alexander said, resting a hand gently on his sister’s shoulder. ""And he never forgot Emily. He spent his life trapped in a world where money mattered more than love. But in the end, he left the most important thing to the person who needed it most.""
Claire looked up at the mountains, feeling a deep, unshakeable peace settle over her heart. She wasn't an invisible housemaid scrubbing floors in the dead of night anymore. She wasn't a runaway child hiding from private investigators in cheap motels.
She was Edward and Emily’s daughter. She was Alexander’s sister. And for the first time in her life, she was finally home.
Behind them, the front door of the cottage opened, and Daniel Reeves stepped out holding a tray of freshly baked blueberry pies. ""Mr. Whitmore, Ms. Claire! Dinner is on the table, and the sunset is starting!""
Claire laughed, splashing the water with her feet before standing up and pulling her brother to his feet.

""Come on, big brother,"" Claire said with a bright, radiant smile. ""Let's go eat. We have a whole lifetime of family dinners to catch up on.""
Alexander smiled, putting his arm around his sister’s shoulders as they walked back up the dock together, leaving the shadows of the past behind them under the golden glow of the setting sun."
