Chapter 2 - The Scent Of Burnt Ash

Victoria wasn’t reaching for a poker; she was lunging for the desk drawers. Alexander lunged sideways, catching his sister by both shoulders and throwing her back onto the leather Chesterfield sofa.
""What are you doing, Victoria?"" Alexander demanded, breathing heavily.
""You don't understand what this will do to us!"" Victoria wept, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into hysterical rage. ""The board of directors is voting on the merger next week! The public trust! Father's legacy! If the press finds out Edward Whitmore had a bastard child with a clinic nurse and tried to leave half the family trust to an illegitimate gutter rat, our shares will plummet! The family will be ruined!""
""So you knew,"" Alexander said, each word landing like lead weights. ""You knew about this.""
""Of course I knew!"" Victoria cried out bitterly, rubbing her wrists where Alexander had grabbed her. ""Ten years ago, when father had his first stroke, I found the revised draft of his will in his personal safe at the estate in Newport. He was planning to rewrite the entire trust. He wanted to give forty percent of Whitmore Global to an unknown girl living in an upstate trailer park. He was going to humiliate mother’s memory! He was going to strip away everything we bled for!""
Claire took a step forward, her fists clenched tight at her sides. ""My mother never wanted your filthy money! She wanted the truth! She spent twenty-five years working two nursing shifts a day, ruining her back, coughing her lungs out, just to pay for my medicine and my school! Edward came to our door every month, begging to take us away, and she sent him packing because she knew what your mother and your mother’s family would do to us!""
""Then why are you here?"" Alexander asked, turning back to Claire. His voice wasn't angry anymore; it was burdened with a crushing, hollow realization. ""If your mother didn't want our money, why did you apply for a job as a maid in this house? Why did you sneak into this room at midnight?""
""Because three months ago, my mother died of leukemia,"" Claire said, tears finally spilling freely down her cheeks. ""And on her deathbed, she handed me that brass key. She made me promise not to touch it. But then I found a letter hidden inside her Bible. It wasn't from Edward. It was from Victoria.""
Alexander’s eyes narrowed instantly as he locked onto his sister. ""A letter from you?""
""She’s lying to divide us, Alexander!"" Victoria stammered, pulling her silk robe tightly around herself. ""She's an imposter playing a psychological game!""
Claire reached into the hidden inner pocket of her gray apron and pulled out a yellowed Western Union telegram slip, dated fifteen years prior. She tossed it onto the desk in front of Alexander.
Alexander picked it up. The message was brief, brutal, and unmistakably typed on Whitmore legal stationary:
Emily Bennett: The settlement was final. If you or your bastard child ever contact Edward again, the custody clinic in Albany will receive the anonymous tip regarding your past narcotics infraction. You will lose the girl permanently. Take the silence money and vanish.
The signature at the bottom was authorized by Victoria Whitmore’s personal private attorney.
Alexander looked up from the paper, his jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped against his skin. ""You threatened to have a child thrown into state foster care? To protect your trust fund?""
""I protected our empire!"" Victoria shouted, standing up from the sofa. ""Mother died of heartbreak because father was obsessed with that cheap woman! I did what had to be done to save this family from public humiliation! Alexander, look at her! She’s a maid! She scrubs floors! You’re going to let someone who cleans toilets dictate the future of our family’s dynasty?""
""She scrubs floors,"" Alexander said with venom in his voice, ""because you made sure she had nowhere else to go.""
Outside the study door, heavy footsteps approached. Daniel Reeves appeared in the doorway, two armed estate guards standing silently behind him. ""Mr. Whitmore? We heard yelling. Do you need us to remove Ms. Bennett?""
Alexander stared at Claire. He saw the exact shape of his father’s jawline mirrored in her profile. He saw the same intelligent, stubborn brow that he saw every morning in his own mirror.
""No, Daniel,"" Alexander said quietly. ""Nobody touches Ms. Bennett. But I want you to escort my sister to her private suite. Post two guards outside her door. She is not to leave the property, use an outside phone, or access any internet networks until I say so.""
Victoria gasped. ""You cannot imprison me in my own house! I am the vice-chairwoman of this company!""
""This house belongs to me,"" Alexander said, his voice cold as ice. ""And until I get every single legal document out of that desk, you are confined to quarters. Escort her out, Daniel.""

As the guards escorted a screaming Victoria down the corridor, Alexander turned back to Claire. He pulled out the massive leather armchair behind his father's desk.
""Sit down, Claire,"" Alexander said gently. ""We have twenty-eight years of stolen life to talk about.""
