Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Arthur Sterling’s face flushed purple with rage. ""You can't suspend the merger, Alexander! The board has already approved the preliminary framework! If you back out now, Sterling Capital will sue Whitmore Global for breach of good faith! We will tie you up in litigation for twenty years!""

""Try it,"" Alexander said evenly. ""You forget that my father gave me sixty percent of the primary voting stock upon his death. The board answers to me. And if you attempt to file a single frivolous suit, I will publicly release the forensic accounting audit my team conducted on Sterling Capital last week.""

Arthur’s eyes widened with genuine panic. ""What audit?""

""The audit into your offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands,"" Alexander replied smoothly. ""The ones you were planning to use to dump two billion dollars of bad commercial real estate debt onto Whitmore Global’s balance sheet the moment our merger closed. Did you really think I didn't see what you were doing, Arthur? You didn't propose to my sister because you loved her. You proposed to her because she was stupid enough and greedy enough to give you backdoor access to our credit lines.""

Victoria gasped, looking between her fiancé and her brother. ""Arthur? What is he talking about? You said we were going to build an international empire together!""

Arthur didn't even look at her. His mask had fallen off completely. ""You naive, desperate fool,"" Arthur spat at Victoria. ""You spent ten years running around Manhattan pretending to be a master CEO, but you don't know the first thing about high finance. You were desperate for a ring and a headline in Vogue, and you gave away every corporate secret your father spent forty years guarding!""

Victoria stumbled back against the grand staircase, clutching her chest. Tears ruined her heavy makeup. For a decade, she had sacrificed her morals, terrorized an innocent mother and child, and alienated her own brother—all for the validation of a man who viewed her as nothing more than a convenient financial stepping stone.

""Get out of my house, Arthur,"" Alexander said, his voice deadly quiet. ""Before I have Daniel throw you into the duck pond.""

Arthur glared at Alexander, then turned his gaze to Claire, who was standing beside the billionaire. ""You think you won, little girl? You’re walking into a viper pit. They’ll eat you alive.""

""She survived thirty years without a penny of Whitmore money,"" Alexander fired back. ""She’s ten times stronger than you’ll ever be. Daniel, show Mr. Sterling to the gate. If his car is still on the driveway in two minutes, release the guard dogs.""

Daniel smiled grimly. ""With pleasure, sir. Move along, Mr. Sterling.""

Arthur turned on his heel and stormed out into the rain, slamming the heavy front door behind him.

The great hall fell silent once more. Victoria slid down against the banister, weeping openly in utter humiliation. Her grand ambitions, her fraudulent engagement, and her ruthless quest for power had crumbled to dust in a single night.

Claire looked at Victoria. There was no joy in Claire's eyes, no petty desire for revenge. She only saw a broken, lonely woman who had destroyed her own soul for money that couldn't love her back.

Alexander walked over to Claire and looked down at her. ""Are you alright?""

Claire exhaled a long breath she felt she had been holding for twenty-eight years. ""I think... for the first time in my life, I can actually breathe.""

""Good,"" Alexander said, turning toward the private library. ""Because morning is coming, Claire. And tomorrow, the world is going to find out who Edward Whitmore’s daughter really is.""
