Chapter 7 - A Dead Woman’s Final Voice Note

Sheriff Hayes immediately slipped on a pair of latex gloves and lifted the small digital voice recorder from the safe. The casing was scratched and dented, bearing the unmistakable marks of a high-speed vehicle impact.

""Daniel, do you recognize this device?"" Hayes asked quietly.

""It was Claire’s dictaphone,"" I choked out, my chest tightening until I could barely draw breath. ""She used it to record design notes for her landscape architecture projects. She had it in her purse the morning she went down the mountain.""

""The state troopers never logged this into her personal property inventory at the crash site,"" Hayes said, his expression hardening. ""Victor Hale was the first one on the scene before the emergency vehicles arrived. He claimed he only retrieved her purse and wedding ring to spare you the trauma.""

Deputy Ramirez plugged the external hard drive into her portable forensic tablet while Hayes pressed the play button on the battered voice recorder.

A burst of static hissed through the quiet office, followed by the heavy breathing of a terrified woman.

Then, Claire’s voice filled the room.

""Daniel... oh God, Daniel, please listen to me..."" Claire was sobbing, her words punctuated by the frantic screeching of car tires against wet gravel. ""The steering won't turn! The power steering line just snapped on the upper ridge. I tried the emergency brake, but the cable is loose! Victor... Victor was the only one who touched the Range Rover this morning. He told me he replaced the brake pads yesterday!""

Emma covered her mouth, stifling a gasp of horror.

Claire’s voice grew more frantic, the sound of the wind rushing through the driver's window howling in the background. ""He confessed to me at the gate, Daniel. He told me that if I didn't leave you and take the babies to his property in Switzerland, he would make sure you buried us all. He said he would take everything you owned and raise my girls as his own daughters. Daniel, I’m not going to make this turn. The guardrail is gone. I love you. Please protect our babies. Don't trust him—don't ever trust Vic—""

The recording cut out abruptly with the violent, horrific sound of metal crumpling against granite, followed by absolute, hollow silence.

I dropped my head into both hands, my knees hitting the hardwood floor. Tears burned my eyes like acid. For eighteen months, I had tortured myself with guilt. For eighteen months, I had believed that I was responsible because I hadn't changed her winter tires that morning, because I had let her drive alone through the storm.

Victor hadn't just been stealing from me. He had murdered the love of my life in cold blood.

""Sheriff!"" Deputy Ramirez shouted suddenly from the desk, her eyes fixed on the forensic monitor. ""You need to see this video feed. It’s the unedited server archive from three nights ago. Victor didn't wipe the files—he just moved them to this encrypted partition.""

Hayes and I scrambled to our feet, leaning over the glowing laptop screen.

On the high-definition security playback, the screen showed the master nursery at 1:45 AM. The three bassinets were clearly visible in the center of the room. The nursery door opened softly, and Victor Hale stepped into the frame wearing a sterile lab coat and rubber gloves.

He walked over to the HVAC return vent in the corner of the ceiling. In his hand was a small wrench. He intentionally loosened the high-pressure aerosol line, allowing a cloud of pale vapor to begin drifting downward directly toward Sophie’s crib.

Then, Victor pulled a small vial of liquid from his pocket, unscrewed the lids of the three nighttime bottles resting on the nursing counter, and poured equal measures into each before stirring them with a silver probe.

He turned toward the nursery camera, unaware that the secondary infrared sensor was recording his face in crystal clarity.

On the audio track, Victor chuckled quietly to himself, muttering: ""Sleep tight, little heirs. In three weeks, Daniel joins Claire, and the Blackwood empire belongs to the man who actually built it.""
