Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Hard Drive

Forty minutes later, two county patrol cars, my pickup truck, and an unmarked forensics van rolled through the grand iron gates of Blackwood Ranch. The storm was finally beginning to blow itself out, leaving two feet of sparkling, undisturbed powder across the sprawling meadows.

The main estate stood on the hill like a dark stone fortress. Its high windows were dark, save for the flickering amber lights of the auxiliary security panel in the front portico.

Emma walked beside me, wearing a thick winter parka Dr. Walsh’s head nurse had loaned her. Sheriff Hayes and a young female deputy named Ramirez walked behind us with breach kits and digital forensic scanners.

We entered the great foyer. The silence inside the mansion was heavy, oppressive, and smelled faintly of chemical coolant and stale cigar smoke.

""The mechanical basement is down this hallway,"" Emma whispered, pointing toward a narrow wooden door behind the kitchen pantry. ""That’s where the HVAC intake runs for the west wing nursery.""

Deputy Ramirez unlocked the door with a crowbar, flicking on her high-intensity tactical flashlight. The beam cut through the thick basement dust, illuminating a massive web of silver ventilation pipes running across the ceiling.

""Look here,"" Hayes muttered, stepping over a puddle of murky water near the main furnace unit.

Tapped directly into the fresh-air intake duct was a secondary plastic hose leading to an unbranded pneumatic nebulizer—the kind used in agricultural pesticide dispersal. Attached to the pump was a five-gallon container labeled Industrial Ethylene Glycol / Anti-Corrosive Flushing Agent.

A digital timer was spliced into the electrical relay. It was programmed to trigger for fifteen minutes every night at 2:00 AM, spraying a microscopic aerosol mist directly into the nursery ducts while the babies slept.

""My God,"" Hayes breathed, snapping several crime scene photographs. ""This was calculated murder. In tiny doses, it looks like acute infant pneumonia. An autopsy on a six-month-old wouldn't even flag it unless the coroner was specifically testing for heavy industrial glycols.""

A red-hot fury surged through my veins, but I forced my breathing to stay steady. ""Where are the servers, Emma?""

""Second floor. Mr. Hale's private office behind the library,"" she said.

We climbed the sweeping oak stairs to Victor’s personal quarters. The room was pristine, lined with mahogany bookshelves, antique leather chairs, and oil paintings of the Montana backcountry. On the wall hung a large photograph of Claire and me at our wedding. Victor stood between us in the picture, smiling warmly with his arms around our shoulders.

I tore the picture off the wall and smashed the glass frame against the edge of the mahogany desk. Behind the picture frame was a small steel keypad safe recessed into the plaster.

""He used a twelve-digit biometric key,"" I said, examining the digital keypad. ""It’ll take a county technician three days to crack the firmware.""

""Try Claire's birthday followed by the date of her fatal crash,"" Emma whispered from the doorway.

I stared at her in shock. ""Why would he use that?""

""When I was cleaning the study blinds last month,"" Emma said quietly, ""I heard him muttering dates while unlocking the drawer. He was obsessed with her, Mr. Vance. He kept her personal journal inside that desk. I saw him kissing the cover when he thought the hallway was empty.""

My stomach lurched with a sickening realization. Victor had never loved Claire like a sister.

My fingers trembled as I punched the digits into the keypad: 0-5-1-4-1-9-9-4 followed by 1-0-1-2-2-0-2-4.

The safe clicked. The green LED light blinked twice, and the heavy pneumatic locking bolts slid back with a soft hiss.

Inside lay three black external solid-state hard drives, a stack of offshore financial bank bonds registered in the Cayman Islands, and a small, cracked voice recorder wrapped in a blue silk scarf.

Claire’s scarf. The one she had been wearing on the morning she drove off Blackwood Ridge.
