Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Quiet Warning

The impact jerked the steering wheel violently to the right. The truck fishtailed, tires screaming against the frozen slush as the bumper bounced off a thick pine tree trunk with a deafening metallic crunch.

""Hold them!"" I roared, throwing my right arm across Emma and the babies to pin them against the seat as I pumped the anti-lock brakes, fighting the spinning momentum.

Behind us, Victor’s SUV didn't back off. It pulled alongside us on the narrow logging trail, the dark-tinted passenger window rolling down halfway. In the passenger seat sat Marcus, the ranch security guard, holding a heavy tire iron.

""Daniel, pull over!"" Victor’s voice blared through a megaphone speaker mounted on his roof bar. ""Your axle is damaged! The girls are in danger! Pull over right now and let us take them!""

""He wants to run us off the ravine into Deadwood Creek,"" Emma cried out, bracing Sophie’s head against her chest. ""That's how your wife died, wasn't it? On an icy turn?""

Those words struck me like an electric shock. Claire’s fatal accident had happened four miles south of here, on an identical unpaved logging switchback, officially ruled an equipment failure due to black ice.

""Hold on tight,"" I said, slamming my boot down on the accelerator.

The heavy diesel engine roared to life, spitting twin rooster tails of mud and gravel against Victor’s windshield. With a vicious flick of the wheel, I clipped his front quarter-panel, throwing his SUV off balance into the deep snowbank on the shoulder. His vehicle spun out, wheels whining uselessly as they dug two feet deep into the drift.

Ten minutes later, the blue neon sign of St. Jude’s County Hospital cut through the swirling snow. I threw the truck into park directly under the emergency ambulance awning, leaving the engine running.

""Paramedics! Code blue, three infants!"" I shouted, kicking through the sliding glass doors with Grace in my arms, Emma stumbling close behind me clutching Sophie and Lily.

Within seconds, half a dozen nurses and an emergency physician swarmed us. Dr. Arthur Walsh, an older physician with silver hair and sharp blue eyes who had delivered half the town's children, immediately scooped Sophie into a warm mobile incubator.

""Arthur, check her lungs,"" I panted, clutching the counter to keep from collapsing from the adrenaline crash. ""The nursery was flooded with something. And she's had high fever for hours.""

Dr. Walsh placed a tiny stethoscope to Sophie's chest, his brow furrowing instantly. ""Her bronchial passages are inflamed, Daniel. Get two milligrams of pediatric dexamethasone right now!"" he barked to a nurse. ""And draw blood for a comprehensive toxicology panel on all three immediately.""

""Toxicology?"" Emma asked from a nearby gurney, where a nurse was wrapping her frostbitten hands in sterile gauze.

""Her breath has a faint chemical signature,"" Dr. Walsh said grimly, looking up at me. ""Daniel, who has been managing their medication? I thought you had Dr. Mitchell overseeing their pediatrics.""

""Mitchell is Victor’s family doctor,"" I said, the room suddenly feeling like it was spinning. ""He visits the ranch twice a week. He told me their lethargy was typical for pre-term triplets recovering from early delivery.""

Dr. Walsh lowered his voice, stepping closer to me while the nursing team worked diligently on the girls under the warming lights. ""Daniel... Samuel Mitchell lost his medical license in California eight years ago for falsifying cause-of-death certificates in probate disputes. He’s not licensed to practice in Montana. He’s an unregistered consultant on Victor Hale’s private payroll.""

The floor seemed to drop out from under my feet. ""What did you say?""

""I tried to send an inquiry to your personal office three months ago when I saw his signature on their initial birth registry filings,"" Dr. Walsh whispered, checking the hallway doors nervously. ""Your ranch business manager intercepted the letter. Victor sent me a legal notice threatening to sue the hospital for defamation if I contacted you directly. He claimed you were emotionally unstable and that all correspondence had to funnel through his legal desk.""

Before I could answer, the glass emergency doors slid open. Sheriff Hayes stepped into the brightly lit foyer, his beige Stetson dusted with snow, his heavy service pistol resting on his hip. And right behind him, looking clean, composed, and wearing an expression of deep sorrow, walked Victor Hale.

""Sheriff, that’s her,"" Victor said quietly, pointing his gloved finger straight at Emma Carter. ""That is the girl who stole the Vance triplets from their nursery tonight.""
