Chapter 1 - The Accusation in the Cold Barn

""You hear that, Daniel?"" Victor’s voice cut through the freezing draft of the old hay barn, dripping with mock concern. ""A diner waitress roaming the west wing of your private estate at midnight, claiming she just happened to comfort your newborn daughters? It’s an inside job. She probably had a car idling past the north ridge. Call Sheriff Hayes right now. Handcuff her to the post before she tries to make another move.""

The two armed guards stepped forward, their heavy boots crunching against the dry straw. Emma flinched, instinctively curling her slender torso forward to shield Sophie, Lily, and Grace with her own shivering flesh. Her teeth chattered violently, but her dark eyes locked directly onto mine with an intensity that pierced through my numb shock.

""Look at her boots, Mr. Vance,"" she gasped, her voice raw and cracked from swallowing freezing wind. ""Look at mine! I didn't have an escape car. I ran through the waist-high drift across the eastern paddock with three babies tied inside my uniform apron because the east wing emergency exit was padlocked from the outside! If I wanted ransom, would I have stripped off my own thermal shirt to wrap around little Sophie's chest? Would I be sitting here freezing to death on bare dirt?""

""Shut your mouth!"" Victor barked, his face darkening with sudden venom. He reached down roughly toward Emma’s shoulder, intending to drag her away by her collar.

""Don't touch her, Victor,"" I snapped, my hand shooting out to grip his wrist like an iron vise.

The ranch manager stiffened under my grip. For a split second, the polished mask of sorrow and obedience he had worn for the eighteen months since my wife Claire passed away slipped completely. Beneath it, his jaw clenched, his eyes flaring with cold calculation.

""Daniel, you’re in shock,"" Victor said smoothly, lowering his arm and adjusting his wool coat. ""Your daughters are safe, thank God, but you cannot let emotion cloud your judgment. She broke protocol. She took three defenseless infants out into a sub-zero blizzard. If anything happens to them tonight, the board will question your legal fitness as sole custodian. Think of Claire’s legacy. Let security secure the suspect while we carry the girls back to the main house.""

""The board?"" I repeated softly, the odd choice of words striking a discord inside my chest. Why would my late wife’s family trust board matter right now when my babies were freezing?

I dropped to my knees beside Emma. The heat radiating off Sophie’s small forehead scorched against my trembling palm. Her breathing was a series of weak, rattling wheezes. Beside her, Lily and Grace whimpered, their tiny faces pressed into the hollow of Emma’s neck, seeking the faint warmth of her beating pulse. Emma didn’t flinch away from me this time. She carefully transferred Grace into my arms, tears finally spilling down her wind-burned cheeks.

""Take her gently, please,"" Emma whispered, her hands shaking uncontrollably from hypothermia. ""Her left foot slipped out of the blanket near the fence line. I rubbed it with snow to stop the frostbite, but she needs warm blankets immediately. Sophie needs an oxygen monitor, Mr. Vance. It isn't just the cold. She was coughing thick fluid before the nursery heater died.""

""Dr. Mitchell was supposed to be on call at the guest cottage tonight,"" I said, glancing up at Victor with mounting dread. ""Where the hell is he?""

""The blizzard knocked down the pines along the guest road,"" Victor answered without missing a beat, pulling out his radio. ""Road is completely blocked. I ordered the private medical transport from town, but the pass is buried under three feet of drift. The house is warm now. The emergency generator kicked on. We should take them inside.""

""No,"" Emma whispered, grabbing my sleeve with the desperate grip of a drowning woman. Her fingernails dug through my thick flannel shirt. ""Mr. Vance, don't take them back into the nursery. The air smelled wrong. Before the heat died, the vents were hissing sweet. It smelled like almond oil and car exhaust. The girls woke up choking. That's why I took them out.""

Victor shook his head in pity, gesturing to the guards. ""She’s delusional. Hysterical rambling from a panicked thief. Take the children, Marcus. Now.""

""Touch these babies and I'll break your arm, Marcus,"" I growled, rising to my feet with Grace pressed tight against my chest. The guard stopped dead in his tracks. I turned my gaze back to Emma, seeing the blood seeping from a deep scrape across her forehead where she had clearly fallen into the snow. A criminal would have run for the highway. A kidnapper would have demanded millions before morning. Emma Carter had laid herself down in the dirt to serve as a human radiator for three motherless infants.

""We aren't going to the main house,"" I commanded, my voice dropping into the quiet, lethal tone that had once built Vance Logistics into an empire. ""We’re loading the ranch truck. We’re heading straight down the private logging road to the county hospital. Emma, can you stand?""

May you like

""I... I can try,"" she whispered, attempting to rise before her knees gave out under the weight of sheer exhaustion.

Before Victor could object, I leaned down, passed Grace to my inner arm, and used my free hand to haul Emma up against my side. ""Victor, bring the suburban around. If that engine doesn't turn over in sixty seconds, consider your nine-year tenure at this ranch terminated on the spot.""
